Thematically speaking, the most important thing Terry Pratchett taught me was the concept of militant decency. The idea that you can look at the world and its flaws and its injustices and its cruelties and get deeply, intensely angry, and that you can turn that into energy for doing the right thing and making the world a better place. He taught me that the anger itself is not the part I should be fighting. Nobody in my life ever said that before. -Serialephemera on Terry Pratchett

@@ManWalksDogs I think it is the essence of Vimes, caught by someone who saw the same things in the works as I did. The witches also raised the concept more than once, e.g "Granny Weatherwax was often angry. Genuine anger was one of the world’s great creative forces. But you had to learn how to control it. That didn’t mean you let it trickle away. It meant you dammed it, carefully, let it develop a working head, let it drown whole valleys of the mind and then, just when the whole structure was about to collapse, opened a tiny pipeline at the base and let the iron-hard stream of wrath power the turbines of revenge."(Wyrd Sisters) She used righteous anger quite creatively. [edit: Note that Vimes was often knurd - the not-drunk wrong side of sober, seeing too much of reality.] The story says it was lack of endogenous alcohol that did it, but I think Vimes had so much natural decency that what he saw in the world hurt, and he needed a couple of drinks to blur the edges and not loose his temper at the wrong time. (I did mean "loose." He kept it tightly reined in, after all.)
