Don't forget Lyle Mays...! Lyle doesn't get the credit he deserves with this band. This band was off the charts! And Joni is at the height of her haunting powers. This woman is a genius--both as a visual artist and as a songwriter. It doesn't hurt that she's beautiful to the eye as well.

@@shmuliknemanov4009 To read and listen and learn from the Musical Memoirs others left of Jaco Pastorius his tragedy was knowing and believing all the superlatives he received after playing his instrument. An instrument that great players of 20th Century double bass (acoustic bass) never considered any more legitimate than a toy piano or melodica. I don't defend those views, just noting them to highlight the opportunities for teachable moments anytime any human player is called a "GENIUS" or starts to believe goonier responses to their gifts and refined skills and\or mistakes enlightenment for entrancement. Teachable moment #1: Don't justify a bandmate who tosses you into a dumpster after a gig! Cut down on risk factors, with EGO being at top of the list just above Fentanyl.... Now that Jaco has transitioned (tragically young) let me avoid labeling him a genius, I don't rank players on a skill set cuz musical virtuosity doesn't interest me any more than Letterman's Stupid Pet Tricks. The muses lure me and do with my imagi-nation what they will. However, when it comes to Joni Mitchell's (Roberta Joan Anderson) bardic and literary work\musical play perhaps no other instrumental accompanist lifts her imagery, melodies and rhythm figures the way that Jaco Pastorius did playing live, likely in their rehearsals and surely on those genre-defying albums Joni and Jaco collaborated on in the 70's. Nothing touches the entire album produced by Henry Lewy, outta tune piano on Paprika Plains and all that goes by the name of DON JUAN'S RECKLESS DAUGHTER. I can't get enough of diving into Joni's work with Jaco and first-rate jazz players. Only sorry there aren't any such i-magi-native sessions with the likes of musical kindred explorers of the Pacific Coast such as Charles Lloyd, especially the recent years where Lloyd added a deft cymbalom player to his combo. Or Oregon piano and original composer Andrew Oliver. Or Portland's Blue Cranes or Swansea alt jazz explorers. David Ornette Cherry for that matter! What a ripping live performance by the baddest of all time crews! Jaco’s,s bass is the arrangement, the bottom, the chords, the melody, like a virus, it’s everything, everywhere. Brecker burns on a folk tune ( who would’ve ever thought ) Lyle and Pat add a layer of sophistication without messing with the essence and Don is laying down a funk vibe on Joni’s folksy guitar vamp . Powerful stuff! Makes me teary eyed to listen to how incredible this performance was.

It seems to me that this song is conveying a dimension of the emotional spectrum that you are either unaware of, or neglecting. Some people's internal states are frantically labile and disorganized. The images of decay and a portentous bird juxtaposed with frenetic instrumentation convey this to me. Not all songs need reluctant nuance to express sadness. The emotional experience of the listener is the best purveyor of this. Or maybe it's just me...

@@muonani Fascinating. I didn't know about the connection of the publishing company with the family name. Thanks for that. I personally have only visited Finland once. Back in the 1970s, when I was getting my doctoral degree in Russian history, I went to Helsinki to work in the amazing Russian collections of the Helsinki University library. I still remember the hospitality and kindness the Finns showed to a young American trying to navigate their language and culture. My landlord gave me a copy of the Kalevala to read (in English!), and it blew me away. I also took a side trip to Kuopio to visit the famous Russian icon museum there. It was wonderful. How's the jazz scene in Helsinki these days? My wife and I are planning a trip to Copenhagen this winter to check out the jazz clubs, and we're thinking of adding side trips to Stockholm and Helsinki for the same purpose. How's the scene there these days? Thanks for any advice.

Right. But this is what rock music sounds like when it is played by jazz musicians. That's why fusion was such an exciting development back in the day. For many fans, rock music is more fun and exciting to listen to than jazz. But it's hard to beat the level of expertise jazz musicians bring to playing their instruments. The jazz world back then was just much more competitive instrumentally than rock. Jazz players honed their skills in after-hours "cutting sessions" where they would play for, and against, each other night after night. And while there were definite winners in those cutting contests, the level of musicianship of all participants improved tremendously. Rock, to my knowledge, never had a similar milieu.

The fact that you aren't familiar is not related to the fact that these songs are being performed and listened to all over the world as you read this. You're very young remember. You seem to be weighing significance by youth culture standards. My take on it is that your generation can't really come up to the bar with anything musical. But I'll listen to those bands you mentioned. You check out Beau Soir by Debussy(he was 16) and tell me what you think. Only timeless form matters to me.
