Joni is an absolute one off in the musical world. It is fitting that Mingus entrusted her with his last musical effort near his death. Her ability to play with time and phrasing, something she began earlier in her career, reached new heights at this time. As far as sounding like herself, how else can anyone sound great?! I was lucky enough to catch this tour at Tanglewood, and we should not leave out credit for Lyle Mays here. The album Mingus was recorded with perhaps an even more gifted crew--Mingus and Miles alumni amongst them. Several years later, I was fortunate enough to catch a few sessions from Pat's 80/81 tour, where similar to your observation, he was playing jazz with absolute monsters--Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, Julien Hemphill, Dewey Redman, and more (depending on the date) and was actually amazed that Pat did the same thing. He was truly able to play in his time shifting style, with clear tone, over some seriously complex and shifting arrangements. For me, the Pat and Joni pairing was celestial for this reason.

If you were playing with Jaco, that's what you wound up doing a lot of the time. The thing that struck me about his own band was how someone else would solo and Jaco would start out accompanying him - and then completely take over. Not sure if he meant to, but he almost always did. If you were in that band, you probably quickly learned to get everything you had to say done in 8, or 12, or 16 bars, because your solos were effectively just a springboard for Jaco's.
