My name is Marcelo'm the world's southernmost country, where, after the Andes is only a long narrow strip of land. No matter how powerful creation of this wonderful artist overcame all obstacles and made this up here. In Chile for 24 years now, the incredible music of Joni Mitchell, makes me fly to distant landscapes of Canada, or walk down the streets of his adopted California. Joni, represents for me a priceless gift that life has given me.

Caught in the middle Carol, we're middle class We're middle aged We were wild in the old days Birth of rock 'n roll days Now your kids are coming up straight And my child's a stranger I bore her But, I could not raise her Nothing lasts for long Nothing lasts for long Nothing lasts for long Down at the Chinese Cafe We'd be dreaming on our dimes We'd be playing "Oh my love, my darling" One more time Uranium money Is booming in the old home town now It's putting up sleek concrete Tearing the old landmarks down now Paving over brave little parks Ripping off Indian land again How long, how long Short sighted business men Ah, nothing lasts for long Nothing lasts for long Nothing lasts for long Down at the Chinese Cafe We'd be dreaming on our dimes We'd be playing "You give your love, so sweetly" One more time Christmas is sparkling Out on Carol's lawn This girl of my childhood games With kids nearly grown and gone Grown so fast Like the turn of a page We look like our mothers did now When we were those kids' age Nothing lasts for long Nothing lasts for long Nothing lasts for long Down at the Chinese Cafe We'd be dreaming on our dimes We'd be playing "Oh my love, my darling I've hungered for your touch A long lonely time And time goes by so slowly And time can do so much Are you still mine? I need your love I need your love God speed your love to me." (Time goes, where does the time go I wonder where the time goes)

I got the pleasure to see Joni sing at the Toronto Folk Festival years ago with James Taylor and at another concert too. She is amazing. Listened to her records right through my teen years. The very best of her generation, a feminist a brilliant original genius singer musician and composer. Proud of her being a Canadian too. wishing her the best recovery from her stroke.. @hoof2001 Joni blazed a trail for so many artists; she writes more than songs, her lyrics are magical and poetic. Her songs are a beacon for anyone who has felt the odd one out (man or woman). At such a young age she was able to nail big issues like love, loss, artifice, innocence. Celine didn't even write her big, fat, but at the end of the day, ordinary, commercial hit. I would never put these two in the same league.

Possibly Joni's finest song - I know that will be hotly debated because it's from neither her finest hour or finest album. But hearing this track, late night on a UK radio station, some 20 years ago got me hooked on Ms Mitchell. I went to the local record library the next day and got out Hejira, Court & Spark, Dog Eat Dog and Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm. I stuck them all onto tape and played them non-stop on my Walkman.

that's the first live rendition of this song I've seen. I love it! I kinda like what's happened to her voice, it's different, more limited so what! She conquered the higher registers, now it's time for something different. Without the husk in her voice, I would have never discovered Joni. It was the Love actually version of both sides now which introduced me to her awesomeness! And how can I forget hejira, my favourite Joni number, even that's far from her earlier angelic voice, but I love it.

It is funny to see some of the comments from those that believe that others would even care to read their comments about what they think they know or dislike about a period of Joni Mitchell's music or life. Their opinions have little if no value here but to waste system space in a computer server. Joni Mitchell is so far above that and always has been in everything she does. If you doubt this, see the recent interview with Jian Ghomeshi on CNC Radio Q www.cbc.ca/q/blog/2013/06/11/joni-mitchell-portrait-of-an-artist/

Listening to this now, it strikes me that Larry Klein seems to be trying to replicate Jaco Pastorius's bass-playing style here. I'm trying to imagine how his playing on this track would have made it sound like something that would have fit nicely on Hejira (if pared down a bit). It would have made a perfect companion to "Song for Sharon".
