I think the reason that people are more sensitive to EVs using cobalt etc, is because they are constantly touted as the ‘moral’ high ground. People are right to stress test that assertion. Other electronic consumer goods don’t really have the same lens applied to it.
@Joe_Blow_
Жыл бұрын
I think it's two fold, one, exactly what you said, we are told that EVs are what good people that care about humanity buy. That, and unlike the phone and laptop industry, THERE ARE ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTS. I can't buy a gasoline powered phone, and while I can buy a desktop that doesn't use a battery, it has a completely different use case than a laptop, so it's not a fair comparison. There is no competing product in either sphere. For vehicles, I don't HAVE to buy an EV if I want a new car. Not to mention, Johnny completely ignored that you can buy both laptops and phones used. You know what happens when you buy those used? Decreases demand for new batteries and keeps awful stuff out of landfills.

On a per-person basis, by my rough math, buying a single EV increases a person's personal cobalt usage by at least 100x: zack said at 2:22:20 "on-average, an EV has between 6 to 12 kg of cobalt". That's far more than in a phone which from a quick google search has ~10 grams of cobalt. Even including a 99 WH laptop battery (largest allowed on an airplane) that's only ~ 50 grams of cobalt. So ~60 grams (0.060 kg) vs at a min 6 kg in a car. Jonny really went off the rails on the cobalt topic. Lost track of the big picture. Instead of ranting and raving about how the people who "won't buy EVs and claim its because of lithium yet still own a phone" and cutting off discussion there, why not let the other people talk and maybe contemplate why its so accepted with phones. I usually enjoy Jonny as a guest, but for the last 30 min I really was tempted to stop listening but was just curious about what Zack and Matt would say. Listened to the audio podcast but came here to read the comments - and wow Matt and Zack's body language suggest they were equally fed up as I was listening.

I’m sorry but the mining debate was completely stupid and juvenile. Johnny boy completely missed the mark. I am an electrical engineer with a master degree in renewable energy production, I drive a polestar 2, and I have always cared for the environment, but I’m still deeply upset about the mining situation in Congo. Here is the reason why that chat was stupid: 1, you cant drive a phone or laptop, comparing cobalt in electronics and electric vehicles makes no sense. what you have to do is compare the emissions from an ev to an ice car over its life cycle, or a life cycle analysis as we engineers call it. And when you do that, you will realize that electric cars are not holier than thou savor that are being presented to us consumers, in fact if you compare a volco xc40 2.0 petrol vs it electric brothering, it will actually produce about 60% of the emissions of the gas version over its expected life time (in the US). And that is due to the extremely polluting mining process for the electric batteries, and the emissions from recycling the batteries. 2, lithium is extremely toxic, if people throw away lithium batteries in landmines like they already do with plastics, then humanity as we know it will die, because lithium is literally used to create poison, while copper is used in hospitals due to its antibacterial properties. So if we continue lithium mining we have to invest just as much money in recycling facilities so that these batteries don’t end in landfills and pollute our water reserves. 3, no, 80% of cobalt is not used in personal electronics, in 2020, 56% of cobalt in the world ended in batteries, and if we continue the current rate of adoption of electric vehicles that number is anticipated to increase to 95%, and approximately 90% of those batteries will end in electric vehicles. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, dear johnny, the reason people didn’t care about cobalt mining 15 years ago is really simple, 15 years ago most cobalt came from Australia and China, but because of the rising demand of cobalt due to electric vehicles, the market had to adjust and mining in Congo exploded. 15 years ago it was not financially worth it for China to ship cobalt from Congo to China, but after the price of cobalt increased by one thousand precent (tenfold) and China had exhausted its own mining capabilities in both mainland China and Australia there was simply no option but to import cobalt from Congo. In conclusion, this problem did not exist to the same level 15 years ago. The reason we care now is because we demand better of electric vechiles, I dont want everyone to get in electic vechiles thinking that they have 0 emissions when that is a blatant lie, that helps no one.

That being said, this is the first time I found myself not enjoying Jonny, at least for the last 30mins or so. It’s not even what he said. ALL mining is inherently terrible for the planet and there’s something to be said about only highlighting such metals regarding EVs. BUT as a guest on a friend’s podcast; the constant over talking, cutting off of Zach and Matt, and the mass grouping of people who have concerns about mass EV adoption as hypocrites or disingenuous is a side of him Im surprised to see. Not only that, but he's just flat out wrong. He's claiming that if you actually care about the ethics of cobalt mining, then you wouldn't have a phone or laptop, as their batteries contain cobalt. It really makes me mad, because he's calling me a liar when I'm not. I have two devices with a battery that uses cobalt. My phone, which is an iphone 7 I bought used, and my laptop, which is a 2014 macbook pro, you guessed it, also bought used. I have had both for years. The last device I bought new that had a battery that used cobalt was in like 2015 when I was in high school, before I knew about the problems with the mining of it, because no one knew about it back then. Johnny - you are really wrong about the difference between Lithium and Copper mining. Lithium is pumped out of underground water reserves AND open pit mined. Copper is primarily extracted by open pit mines. Yes open pit mines exist that mine hard rock minerals to extract lithium like those in Australia, and they are a major source. But there are very large economic sources of lithium that come from pumping groundwater and evaporating that brine it to create lithium-containing condensates which are then processed as high-grade ore. It couldn't be more different from most primary economic sources of copper which is just a big-ole' hole in the ground. I'm having a hard time confirming this fact - but I believe most of the production capacity that's being added over the next decade will be of the evaporation type. But this is overshadowed by the second problem: If you had conceded when Matt pushed back that "oh you're probably thinking of this type of mining activity where they do use water, but there are other ways which are also used which is similar to copper" that would have been far more intellectually honest. It's even more problematic because 5 minutes later you mention precisely this evaporation type of lithium mine. Being this confidentially factually incorrect, after claiming you've done so much research, about such a basic fundamental concept of your argument really undermines the rest of the opinions you have about EV's and batteries. You may be factually correct about many items, and I believe you are, but your process of presenting facts and forming an argument is highly flawed. Interrupting and even talking over other people to make your point even harder doesn't help either. This was a difficult listen. Oh and P.S I just did some searching - according to one source on the internet, it's validity is not concrete, but it claims that coblat consumption among consumer devices and electric vehicles is equal. Not an 8x difference. It's already equal. www.cruxinvestor.com/articles/the-ultimate-guide-to-the-cobalt-market-2021-2030f

Lithium is mined through evaporation of brine pools in salt flats, or from hard rock mining of lithium-bearing minerals. Copper is mined the same way as most metals. Environmental impact is much different, although lithium is cheaper to mine. I don't think it matters in the grand scheme of things, but somehow replacing all cars with EVs instead of doing something to provide clean fuel to existing cars seems inefficient and unwise. Everyone has their own idea of how we should care about the environment but I think we should concentrate on faster results to actually do something instead of betting on a technology abandoned in 1910

However, it was quite frustrating listening to Johnny get so animated about a subject about which he clearly has a lack of knowledge. Indeed, much of what he argued passionately about was just flat out wrong. Both Matt and Zack absolutely took the right approach in saying, several times, they were not knowledgeable about the science and they were not sure all mining was the same. I AM an earth scientist and a petroleum engineer, and have spent my whole career in this field. I have also lived and worked all over Africa. Clearly Johnny has not. that car shipping thing reminds me of this something the Austrian National railway offers when you book a personal ticket price of 200€ for an 13hr 500 mile overnight train ride with personal bed + shower + breakfast for an extra 40€ they'll transport your car or motorcycle on some dedicated carts at the back of the train Goes from/to Hamburg, Germany but I forgot what the Austrian city it ends in was of course makes vacation/visiting into the alps or the other direction, meaning German Seaside and Ferries to Scandinavia a lot more viable If you have with an EV without massive range

Roughly 500,000 gallons of water goes into extracting 1 ton of lithium while roughly 100,000 gallons of water is needed to extract 1 ton of Copper. Not saying extracting copper is not bad, but it's less severe than extracting Lithium (per ton wise)

That last argument, Jesus, took Johnny a while to understand the point. And if he so knowledgeable, how come he didn't mention most cobalt and lithium exploration is controlled by Chinese companies, which themselves belong partly to the government? Nobody in there was saying that oil good, battery bad, just that you cannot openly say batteries, at this moment are a clean and ethical way to power the world, as oil or fossil fuels aren't either. Kudos to Matt and Zack for trying to keep the conversation intelligent.

About the electric car discussion: The thing that annoys a lot of people is the whole marketing around them (green energy, saving the planet, zero emissions, moral posturing) that conflicts directly with the stories about cobalt mining and all the other stuff. People don't want to buy a more expensive car even with tax credits that doesn't offer the higher moral status that's promised on the advertisement campaings.

Johnny completely missed the point, it’s not that ICE vehicles are cleaner than EVs. It’s the fact that people look at EVS as something that perfectly clean and will save the environment so we should take our tax dollars and give thousands to people who buy the car.

On Johnny's "people hate EV's and that's the only reason they care" argument, Matt said that people weren't upset about it with phones cause they didn't know. But with phones, people have been upset for YEARS about the child labor, and have been picking companies like apple apart because of it. So they do care. The only difference is, there's no alternative. Cell phones are pretty much essential these days, and there's no other option other than keeping your phone as long as you can until it dies. With cars, there's an alternative. Obviously mining oil isn't great either, but people who buy ev's are largely claiming moral high ground. That's the difference.

Big L by Johnny here. No one is saying the mining of Cobalt is OK. Just because you've been aware of the terrible situation for a while, the primary point was the working conditions at cobalt mines is not the same as copper. you admitted to not watching the podcast outlaying the conditions of the mine yet you remain committed that its all the same yet DRC has ARTISAN mining and its affected ALL industries using LiOn.

Hey from Australia! We also mine Cobalt. And Lithium. We're exporting to EV manufacturers now and are ramping up supply in a massive way! Of course JL is spot on here - we are ramping up supply in the short term to meet short term demand, because Sodium chemistry batteries are being released right now from CATL that don't require lithium or cobalt. The argument against EVs based on these minerals is absolutely absurd, and honestly in two to three years we'll look back and see how idiotic the whole discussion is.

Jonny's point on the hypocrisy between Consumer Electronics and EV's is totally unfounded. Apple has been dealing with advocacy movements on its factory conditions and sourcing of minerals since before $TESLAQ was even a thought. There are entire startups that were built on the moral sourcing of parts and repairability. It's true they went nowhere, but that's also true for EVs, those who want and can buy EVs, will continue to buy EVs. So even his argument about the "FUD" is unfounded.

I think we can all agree that extractive industries aren't great for the environment. But, how you use those extracted resources is important. Alex on Autos did a pretty good breakdown of why regular hybrids would be a better use of battery resources than an equivalent number of full EV batteries. It's about driving our resource usage down collectively. If a 60kwh battery in a full EV could be used to make 120 40-50mpg hybrids and gets 120 people 15-25mpg better averages it's better than one person not using gas at all. Which is why I think power density is more important than energy density right now. If you can have a 50lb battery deliver 250hp for like 30 seconds and accept high charge rates consistently then a range extended hybrid could run a very narrowly tuned gas engine getting ~50% thermal efficiency, so like 16kwh per gallon of gas, and get like 60-100mpg with good performance. Cars would be lighter, get great range and pretty decent performance when you want it.
