To everyone in the comments AND Stephen A Smith himself, I hope you read this: The fact is, Adam Silver brought this on himself. He jumped into bed with gambling conpanies and now a player found doing the wrong thing is crucified. Manipulation of player prop bets has been rampant in ncaa basketball for many years - being manipulated by players obviously, as well as coaches and refs. Go ask any ncaa basketballer to speak off the record, and you'll hear the truth. It's gotten so bad that several U.S states have banned player prop bets and there is a further push to expand the ban to more states. So, this has been going on for a long time at lower levels and god knows how many others have done what Jontay did in nba but do it smarter. Gambling, whether it is on sports or two cockroaches climbing up a wall is, for many people, a disease. We all know gambling took a stranglehold of even the GOAT MJ. It is truly insidious. Before simply looking at black and white facts, the NBA should also investigate WHY and show a duty of care to an EMPLOYEE that is bombarded by gambling commericals on a daily basis. Jontay is a victim of the NBA enabling this to happen. They opened the door...and a player walked through it.

Disagree on Pete Rose. Any game he didn't bet on his team to win was a signal to his bookies (intentional or not) that there was something wrong with the Reds that night. Plus he likely hurt his team playing for strategies to help him win bets more than for them to win as many games as possible. An extreme nuance, but I believe it's important. It's very very simple:. Do not bet on games for a league that employs you.

A mid player betting is worse than a racist owner ? No wonder they say SAS isn't black.

Gambling is one thing but when you start cheating your play and availability then you have no credibility or integrity to play basketball period for any league

For those people thinking he’s headed Overseas. “NOT GOING TO HAPPEN”! Book It! McDonalds is always hiring. In my opinion, he should get really close with his brother Michael, and become part of his entourage. That’s what I would do. Stay close to the real $$$$$. Maybe he could be his brother’s laundry guy etc.

Can someone explain this in Layman terms please. How did he cheat? Did he bet on games while he was playing on his team?
