Years ago I read about why all of America tuned in to Johnny Carson (and their kids stayed up later to watch Letterman right after). They both were from the Midwest and their style had a folksy regular guy sensibility. The guest was hip, urbane, rich and famous, but the viewers could see themselves in the seat of the host asking, "gee, that's interesting. Wow, that's incredible" Comedians are tapped into that sensibility better than slick network figures today.

He also has a way of presenting others' wisdom as his own. 99% of what he says comes from Nietzsche, Jung, Aristotle and a host of others, and though he acknowledges his debt to them in his recorded lectures, he rarely if ever mentions their names when speaking to the media. The media then confuse Peterson's insights with the insights of the intellectual giants on which his entire worldview rests, and the people who read, listen to or watch said media fall for the same rouse. Don't fall for this rouse. Go to the source(s) and find out why Peterson says what he says. Never treat him or the likes of Pinker as authorities on social change. Jordan Peterson is a book nerd who spent most of his life in a cushy classroom and doesn’t know the real world. Now he is talking nonsense statist bullshit. Our institutions are competent? Power is only greatness? Yeah taxing the fuck out of your peasants and setting up regulations to make their lives harder and the people at the top easier is fucking great, for those at the top. Power always comes with the ability to exercise control over others. This is why it’s in our dna not to be completely trusting of those who have it.

@@serggla924 Peterson comes from tough, tough country, the northern edge of the farm belt in Alberta. No one survives in that country unless they're tough as nails and able to handle a lot of difficulties, oftentimes with little or no support. I've worked that country as an oil rig roughneck and in heavy construction where first thing during winter mornings it might be 40 below and the day might get even colder as it progresses, so I've seen it first-hand and know it's too tough for a lot of folks. For someone to come out of that country and achieve what Peterson has is one hell of a story, especially with his health problems and how he's had to provide for others with health problems. I'd say your post is ignorant and mouthy, and I suspect you've probably never done much real work in your life, and are probably too useless to know how to do much competently. No shit... I seriously never thought about that until know, but it's very true, even if only subconsciously. Y'know who one of my all-time cinematic heroes is? Burt Gummer from the Tremors series. That dude is nothing spectacular physically, but he's an absolute Chad. Now I would say though, at least with 300, that the bravery and tenacity of the Spartans is what I think is important. Capitalism’s end result. No I’m not advocating for socialism. People like to scream that capitalism is amazing because the better item gets sold more. That’s great on paper but in actual practice, which we have decades of historical proof backing up, competition is squashed by the people at the top where the new products and competition are blacklisted into obscurity. This leads to a stagnate to that progress advocates tend to try and rely on. It’s why we have a mixed economy.
@Chris-zz9wm

@@tchoythao1730 I appreciate your comment and agree with you to an extent. Any economic or political system in which a small group of people can wield power over others is susceptible to corruption. And capitalism is one example of that, for the reasons you described. Additionally, when the rich and powerful capitalists manipulate politicians with their influence, it creates a whole separate issue--as we see in America. However, I'd argue that capitalism is the best available system when compared to its alternatives. I was about to write the reasons why, but I think this is getting to be long enough of a comment lol. Essentially, my main point in this reply is that a certain segment of people are corruptible, particularly those that desire power over others rather than greatness. And in capitalism, the common-folk have more of an ability to stop said corruption than in a system such as socialism or communism, not that you are advocating for them. Okay I'm ending my long comment here now lol.
@tchoythao1730
3 жыл бұрын
@@Chris-zz9wm I disagree with that notion that the people have more power to stop the corruption as when corruption occurred in the industrial revolution, it took the government full force to stop it. I also disagree that capitalism is the best system in general, as it is what is ruining the mixed economy that the US has, which stems from the overpush of capitalist ideas probably due to the Cold War propaganda. All systems work on paper, theoretically, however the human aspect is what messes things up. However, the one that works the best at the moment is the mixed system as it allows both the government, the people, and the business to check each other due to its flexible nature. The problem with it is that it does take more time to decide on certain aspects, but change doesn’t happen as fast as people want.

The thing about Jordan Peterson is that his thought process is very linear. In fact every point he makes is linear. He could literally provide actual archeological evidence for every point that he makes, yet social commentators do not engage him and spend most of their time trying to put him in a box. Here is the thing, it doesn't even matter if you agree or disagree with Peterson. There are people like Sam Harris that disagree with Peterson on certain points, but no scientist worth their salt would ever say that Peterson does not attempt to formulate an argument to the best of his ability. Peterson asks the right questions, and more importantly he tries to solve the right questions. That is what makes him great in my books. It isn't about his philosophy. It isn't about lobsters or making your bed. Peterson is unlike most human beings, because he asks the right questions and is willing to take them on, legitimately. Most prominent individuals nowadays, however, have an end goal and then they shoehorn the chain of evidence to fit their narrative. In other words, they are disingenuous. If you disagreed with Peterson, tackling his claims in good faith would do better for your case (assuming you were right), than avoiding it. If Peterson is so wrong in everything that he claims, then why do so few people address his claims honestly? This worries me. I do not agree with everything that Peterson says. I probably agree with 90% or 95% of what he says, but I believe that 100% of what he says is a rational scientific argument. The 5% or the 10% that I disagree with Peterson on is something worth debating. Why do we want to simplify society into a provincial war of identity rather than one based on scientific inquiry. It is ok to disagree with people. You look at the evidence and move society forward. You do not attempt to destroy your rivals due to a fear of being wrong.

A great example is Ed Sheeran. He doesn’t look as great as a brad or a chad, but can make every girl pick him over them just with his voice. We’ve confused a great physique and athleticism as alpha and greatness, and it can be, but we have to remember to distinct whether it is or not because a lot of them are only powerful and never great, hence the “peeked in high school” athletes and popular kids.

Appearance is a form of power, not greatness. How you use said power, or lack of, can heavily determine your greatness. Examples, -Dan Blizerian is not a great man, but he is (was) a powerful one because of his (daddy’s) wealth. - Trump is debatable whether he is a great man as he is a trust fund baby with dirt across his name even before his presidency. However, Elon Musk is the opposite arguably as while he is a trust fund baby, he is known as an amazing boss. Stories contain the world view and ideology of their writers. Successful stories contain a world view and ideology that is palatable to society. You should not mindlessly absorb world views and ideologies. You need to ask yourself why someone spent lots of money to put something in a movie. You should examine how you react to it. You should examine how society reacts to it. You should examine why you and others are endorsing the world view and ideology of a movie by spending money on it. The television and movies were created to spread propaganda. They are highly effective in implanting ideas while you are in a vegetated, suggestible state. You internalize ideas by passively exposing yourself to them. Instead, you need to pay attention, analyze, and discuss. Unfortunately, you two missed the point of the video and the commenters. The people in this circle aren't looking to movies for a "sense of self worth and meaning" or "life lessons and deep guidance". We recognize how successful media reflects the ideas of society, because most consumers do not critically examine what they are consuming. Based on your comments, this includes you two. I advocate for a complete abstinence from movies and television. They are corrupt.

Even the best of people will have times and moments when their AWARENESS gets clouded by EMOTION. Some will realize right after, some in a little bit of time, some much later, and some never. A BUDDHA will almost never get CLOUDED - But to even reach that point, the Buddha had to go through a lot of DARK CLOUDS. Human beings are not ROBOTS, their competence can at times get compromised. And when going through PERSONAL TURMOIL, awareness can get CLOUDED. Simple. Thats why someone may perform really well .. and then some odd moment they will crack or choke or have PTSD. Has someone reached power and done good? One springs to mind right off the bat. Nelson Mandela. Given authority, the top position in a nation with a large number of identifiable people most lesser spirited people would despise for what they did to him. And his first act. - his only response, for the rest of his life was to forgive, improve and move on. A force of will and good that is hard to fathom. I'm damn sure I would not have responded as he did, I would have been angry to the point of seeking vengeance. That someone is capable of going through what he went through - and forgiving, almost immediately, and then setting about making things better for everyone. That's some guy. Sadly, since his passing SA has fallen back quite a bit. Which perhaps proves even more that it was his personal force-of-will that held it together. There are other examples. Many. But that one struck me as Andrew was asking the question.
