He's discussing challenging ones...of course the most challenging ones are probably going to be the most technically-focused. Both petrucci and Rudess have plenty of emotive parts as well, they're just not as complex as the super-technical ones.

@juswannawatchthings It actually is a possible injury. Moving your fingers like this very rapidly for extended periods of time while your arm is tensed up or in an awkward position can severely compress the median nerve that runs through your wrist, and can also sprain or tear the tendons of the forearm if you try to "play through the pain." As JR said, you have to stay loose and relaxed and also make sure you're using proper technique (in terms of arm and hand positioning).

@phyllostachys42 no he's not sheet music (or shouldn't be after all his experience) - you can play from memory - .... memory in the 'brian' of the notes/music, plus 'finger memory' - your fingers just know where to go, after LOTS of practice - look at concert pianists - they often play without music.....

@Hellotheres no he's not - ahhh, so many people here think he has to read the music - but musicians know that with practice and experience, one develops 'finger memory' - the music and notes are memorized in the brain, and in the fingers - don't need the sheet music - only for new pieces!!

its a fair point...King Crimson (along with maybe Marillion) are probably one of the only truly 'mainstream' progressive bands. Progressive, for me, means doing something new and continually inventing. DT have a style that works for them and while it does vary a bit, the same basic stance is there (which, I quite enjoy...but thats not my point). Crimson is always changing, always pushing boundaries in reaction to what they've done before (something Marillion does as well) to do something new.

You know, I was a little rash as well. But in my opinion the soloing he does in DT really fits well with the music. And as much as i love a more keyboard "minded" solo, I really don't think it would fit into a lot of DT songs. But bear in mind, there's also some songs where he does play more melodic (if that's what you meant), like The Spirit Carries On, Another day, Through Her Eyes - to name a few :) But most importantly I really do believe he enjoys playing what he does, which it's all about!

As far as I know, the song is in C, and the notes they're using are the same as in F harmonic minor. Which actually makes it a C Jewish scale :)
