Like many countries hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, Jordan, which is home to the UNESCO heritage site of Petra, also saw its tourist dollars ebb.
But this year UNESCO granted the historic city of As-Salt, once an administrative centre during the Ottoman empire, the same status.
The government is now working on a $10m plan to renovate its sandstone buildings in the hope tourists will soon return.
Al Jazeera's Natasha Ghoneim reports from As-Salt, Jordan.
