I love it when a composer does that certain descending bass technique at 1:01 while keeping the top note constant

21:54 - 22:55 is surely THE most stunning passage of romantic choral music. I sung the tenor 2 part (honestly one of the most dramatic and satisfying to sing parts in the work) like 7 years ago or so, when I was young, and I stil remember quite a bit of it. Incredible.

I am an Orthodox Christian, and our petty squabbling aside, I genuinely believe this piece of music was written with the Holy Spirit by his side. It is absolutely beautiful, and one of the few pieces of music that got me to tears from genuine awe.

As a self-professed musical nerd, I'd heard of Rheinberger as a respectable, if obscure Liechtensteiner-German romantic composer of refined and beautiful music for organ, orchestra, vocal, and chamber ensembles. And then today, I find that one of his pieces, a Mass in E-flat major, is the source of one of the most famous internet memes, the "Heavenly Choir sound effect"; I don't know how I haven't found this out earlier. On top of that, his Mass Op. 109 is very beautiful. Meaning that the person who first made it into a meme has at one point come across the music of Josef Rheinberger, the obscure and respectable Leichtensteiner-German romantic composer, and almost single-handedly made one of his pieces famous across the internet. Perhaps the creator of the meme is a nerd for classical music as well. That brings a smile on my face :)

Despite it being very memey music, it's actually very beautiful harmonically. I think it became a meme because it sounded so pleasant and divine. I'm glad I found it.

I used to sing his Stabat Mater in choir, so I've known that Rheinberger's the actual TOP GOAT in sacred music for a long time. Glad to hear my preconceptions verified once more. This is on the same level as Rachmaninov Vespers.

There appears to be an added 6th in the penultimate chord of the Agnus Dei. Written is an Ab minor chord (subdominant minor), but there appears to be an 'F4' in that chord in the recording (I think I prefer it with the added F)

It is a pity that Mr Bruffy so disregards Rheinberger's tempo indications for the Gloria and Credo.
