As expressive a language as ASL is, it is almost ironic how perfectly suited it is to express music! This was beautiful!

I don't have words enough to tell you how happy I am that you are making song videos again. You have always given me great joy with your singing and it was you who gave me the courage to sing praise music in church in ASL when my hearing became too muddled to hear the vocal singing. Thanks to that encouragement, I am now the first signing chorister in my church praise team. You have brought good to this world Mr. Torrence. Please never stop.

It is a moving song. You really connect to the message, but your deaf son cant hear it like you do. This ASL is no where near the beauty and quality of the mesage. I can see he really tried ,but the proof is in the pudding. Deaf people, like your son, will not connect to the message like we do when we hear it.

I woukd like to give constructive feedback. I can tell you are trying really hard to follow ASL sentence structure. ASL does not need to follow a cadence. I see you are trying to match the tempo. when we hear there is a gradual increase in the song. The skilled signer would interpret a full scene depicting the lyrics. like showing a person going through hardship who then gets support to climb the mountain. The sign music doesn't evoke emotion like hear the music does. The long intro is your opportunity to lay the context for the rest ofbthe song. An ASL artist could adlib that emotes feelings. Your non-manual gestures don't support the ASL. The most concerning thing is that newbies want to immitate your signing.
@jediprice70

Well if I can offer my own constructive criticism, it was great for me. What he did is often called musicality or lyricism. Also your comment should be on its own, not as a reply to someone else's comment which deserves to be left to its own topic. I really don't even understand what you're talking about, though I can tell you are trying to improve the signing in some way. I really felt this to be some of the best signing for a song I have seen. Really helped me to feel the music, the lyrics, the tone, all of it. I've never been this moved by a signed video before. So I say that's worth a very good score. :)

Hold on guys, my "own constructive feedback" to support a guy that changes lives out there and someone focus on ASL. ASL is a language, like any language, any speaker has their style, let us use it. Are you people discriminating against others that are new to ASL or don't have an impairment? Seriously? Plus, I have used this video in supporting people with learning disabilities and the parts that Captain is signing music and his facial expressions keep the people i support happy and focused because they can still keep signing even when they cannot make sounds. So the newbies you are talking about can be people with learning disabilities that have no other way of expression. Let everyone express themselves, we are all unique for Goodness sake.

this song with Captain signing it brings smiles and tears in the eyes of everyone where I work whenever I put it on and everyone starts signing ASL even though we live in the UK. So VERY NICELY DONE Captain. We love you. Plus you are very handsome. ;) Guys and girls , one more important thing, in this world we need to live with each other and not against each other because we are all one. We need to accept our uniqueness and embrace the uniqueness of others. You don't need to be judgmental when you see someone trying his best for a good cause. And with regards the "money", yes people receive money in a capitalist economy. Yes, the more people you help the more money you make. But is it bad to make money from helping others or from hurting others? Leave Captain and us alone, and go fight with BP and Shell that have destroyed the world and make trillions. Thank you. Hello, CaptainValor. I was introduced to your videos via watching "Bohemian Rhapsody", your glossed (? is that the correct phrase?) interpretation. Subsequently, I've seen this video above, in addition to "Party in the USA". I also read through your carefully thought-out essay on why you made the decision to cease songsigning. There are a number of issues raised there, with which I have a bit of empathy. I grew up in a family where English was not the first language of my parents: but they forbade me from speaking in their native speech, so that I would not speak with any trace of "foreign accent." In a sense, I was raised with a 'foot in two different worlds" and the negotiation of figuring out how I could function in the healthiest way without cancelling out both vital strains to my character was challenging. There isn't any conclusion that needs to be drawn here; only that I'm still processing my reactions to your decision to stop making videos, and my reactions to the reactions posted here and on that facebook thread. I hope to return at a later date and post more once I've figured out what I wish to say. One of my reactions, however, is simply sorrow, at a shattered dream. I hope and pray that's not the end of your story. I know it won't be. Grace and peace to you always. --GaloisGirl

I discovered your videos right after you stopped making them. I finally have the need to comment, and I hope that you read it. I have been placed, in the past, repeatedly, in the position of interpreting for deaf people at my church and "teaching" ASL in its private school, although my ASL skills were minimal at the beginning. I know that many in the Deaf Community would not approve, BUT I know that the Deaf who I interpreted for (and learned MUCH from) GREATLY APPRECIATED that there was some ONE person who cared enough to make a fool of herself to try to communicate with and interpret the church services for them. As another commentator said, I wish we could all accept each other for what we are. I wish we all could be happy knowing that another person loves our language so much that they want to learn it. I understand that ASL language is a huge part of the Deaf Culture, and I do understand, to some extent, where the Deaf Community is coming from in their reaction to your videos, BUT "imitation is the best form of flattery." You do a fantastic job of interpreting, and I think you should continue with your videos and just drop the "ASL" label. "Sign language" is a general term to describe any visual-manual mode of communication. Your interpretation of this song brings tears to my eyes every time - why? Beautiful song, beautiful visual interpretation! Your videos have brought much joy and blessings to many people - shouldn't that be the most important thing? Shouldn't that be something that the Deaf should want us to experience, regardless of who is signing? Nevertheless, God bless you!
