Thanks❣️ I am hoping to get up and running with basic bass guitar and with painting abstract art. I know my block is primarily emotional, secondarily interruptions from work life :-) but your 20 hours suggestion is a very doable great goal!

In addition to that, if you're learning to play a 🎸 (bass) always practice 45 minutes before sleep and another 45 minutes the next day before you hop into the next chapter and you will see a drastic change in your skills 👊 Happy learning!

"Feeling stupid at the start doesn't feel good" No it doesn't, buuuut, that's my favourite time. You're just beginning, nobody expects anything of you, the only pressure is what you put on yourself. I embrace it, lean into the wonderful noise I make as I start to learn something just above where I am. I can play the ukulele to a bit past beginner level, if I wanna try new chords or a fingerpick pattern it's part of the fun to see how I can fuck it up. Takes some of the stress out of sounding bad. The beginning is when there's the most to learn and it's most fun for me ^_^

Wow! That's a really positive way of seeing it. The "feeling stupid at the start" part is usually the thing i hate most

This 20 hours rule (like the 10,000 hours rule) is a vast oversimplification. You certainly can learn a lot in 20 hours but you will not reach a point where you have even moderate competence in more complex skills areas such as learning a language or cooking. I have been trying to learn French for over 3 years and am still far from proficient. Great points in the talk but his last statement is not realistic.

So is that 20 hours for each subskill or 20 hours for the overall goal?

You probably won't be writing whole sentences of kanji, but you might be able to write in hiragana and katakana at a first grade level in 20 hours.

It is like to associate unique syllable sounds to some 60 pictures [no kanji] so I think that it could take like 4 hours as a max [ focused study then dictations]... if you take it by pure anki flash card exposure [not being able to write a dictation] this should be more like 2 or 3 hours . With kanji one speaks about Chinese..

You can learn enough of a language in 20 hours to: leave the airport, go to a hostel/hotel, order food, thank a stranger for help, get to a site, go back to the airport, board the correct plane back home. There!! You successfully communicated efficiently to get things done in a foreign land. Now if you want to get proficient enough to live there, then yes you will need someone to help develop you over a period of months.

The idea hear is basic competence. Are you going to learn an instrument to pro level in 20 hours? No. Will you be able to hold court over a camp-fire? Probably. So for language you'll probably have tourist level in that time
