I will just say as a straight man...freakin' Nolte was pretty goddamn beautiful in the late 70's. Loved, loved loved The Deep. So much fun!! But this is a waaay better movie. More gritty than the films Josh described and flew under the radar. Like Southen Comfort a few years later.

Underrated film. Anthony Zerbe kills it as the corrupt CIA officer.

It was Masur that surprised the hell outta me. I'll always remember him as the molester from Fallen Angel and the boyfriend on One Day at a Time, but with that horrible temper and the ragged beard he had in this, he was downright scary.

Yes, Zerbe is superb as the corrupt narcotics officer who threatens Nolte's Vietnam vet.

Again, love Trailers From Hell, and I especially love Josh Olson’s commentaries on them, because he knows just what to say about films, and you can tell he loves the pictures he is talking about (the other commentators are excellent as well) Speaking of Nick Nolte, could you guys do a commentary for Teachers (1984)? I think another good commentary for Mr. Olson to do would be The Yakuza (1974) with Robert Mitchum, a hard boiled tough guy classic that would be right up his alley!

Excellent commentary. I saw the picture at a Manhattan revival house on Vandam Street in the fall of 1986, and then bought a used copy of the paperback on the street for maybe .50. They're both brilliant. In some ways, the picture is better, because the Ray Hicks of the book is too Nietzschean. Nick Nolte's father had been a gyrene in The War, and he explained to Nick the mentality of a marine. (What sort of Marine murders his best friend?) In the picture, Ray becomes more of a tragic hero. The violent scenes blend wit, violence, intelligence and grandeur, something like his contemporaries Walter Hill and John Milius. When I was a kid, I'd seen Reisz' Morgan, Isadora, and Saturday Night and Sunday Morning on TV. He had a thing for tragic eccentrics.

Didn't know this was on Blu-ray. Awesome! It was so great being a teenager in the late seventies and being exposed to movies like this one.

JOSH! Now that you've cracked the door open for discussions on great Nick Nolte performances it would seem the most logical progression to hear your take on a great actor being married to the great writer who's work had only been rendered successfuly to the silver screen twice... Kurt Vonneget. Not only was "Mother Night" a riveting experience but it also had a great trailer and this one seems taylor made for you where I could see "Marathon Man" leaning more towards Larry's ball park (leaving the oft confused 'Night Mother a toss up.)

This movie is a masterpiece. Totally unique and a definite precursor to the Tarantino noir/farce aesthetic. Criminally underrated.

Fantastic film. First watched it on late night cable TV -- A&E or Bravo -- back in the late 1980s; it totally captured my imagination. Later, read the book...both the move and book are really good.

The thing is - I remember seeing a much, much darker version of this movie - which may have been called _Dog Soldiers_ like the book. Another factor in that - is that I may or may not have read the book. None of these people were good people. What they did here - was make Nolte's character a hero. In the other version of this - he was not a hero. The biggest problem I had with this movie - was how the hell someone like Tuesday Weld could end up with such a loser as the guy she was married to in this movie. I just could not believe that her character could have ever been married to that character. .

I saw this movie on television many years ago in UK but it seems to have disappeared since then. There is a sequence towards the end where John Converse is being held by the two bad men working for the rogue agent on a hill top wired for lights and sound. When Ray Hicks goes into action to frustrate them and free his friend it is accompanied by a loud, energetic country type of song played on the speaker system, which I believe might be "The Mountain" by Creedence Clearwater revival. I have not seen the music referenced with this film and I can't seem to find the song listed by CCR I wondered if anyone remembers it and could confirm this?
Great movie…not really a Vietnam movie. Really a crime noir.

Yeah, probably not a "Vietnam movie" in that the war itself is the central theme....Vietnam, however, is part of what casts a shadow over the whole thing....the war and the counter culture are key components of the whole zeitgeist that Stone was looking at when he wrote the book. Sort of the dark "morning after the Summer Of Love".
