Starting the video right now but leaving a comment instantly about something that’s important to highlight: I am so glad that video games are taken much more seriously as an art form nowadays, to witness Josh talk about this great game in a prestigious university overseas is wonderful, I hope that more games of this historical quality and artistic value continue being produced and lauded outside of the usual spheres; I’ve been a gamer since I was a kid and I’ve learned so many things thanks to each of them (e.g. became fluent in English much faster through their dialogue, learned a ton about historical figures, acquired a much more varied musical taste, etc.), the people behind their development are increasingly more recognized now and that’s very positive.

Awesome lecture, learned a lot (including how Guy is supposed to be pronounced, that threw me for a loop!)

The best rpgs are therapeutic with philosophical gut punches and Pentiment has all those things and more.

Not just that but the best historical fiction makes you truly feel and relate to the people of their era and understand just how similar people from the history books were to us. Video games have a remarkable ability to transport you to and immerse you in their flowing worlds where your actions and words have effect. Pentiment is a fantastic example of this.

It breaks my heart that they put an unbelievable amount of effort, thought and texture into this game for it to not do very well. I respect Sawyer for making a game he wanted to make rather than bucking to trends, the industry is better off for it.

i think it did extremely well if you take into account exactly how different this game is and how difficult it could have been to make this a gaming experience. they made something special with a small team and a smaller budget and its been recognized throughout the industry since. its been impactful enough that it was ported over to other consoles after its release and is still maybe the most unique game of its kind. i loved it and it will forever be one of the most memorable gaming experiences of my life.

I don't think this game was all about profit. It was clearly a niche game from the outset and Sawyer has claimed that the game was made especially possible through Gamepass. The overwhelming number of 10/10 reviews and number of people who swear by gamepass because it introduced them to games like Pentiment build a very good reputation for both Obsidian and Microsoft.
