Love the playing, but try this with a better Les Paul. I wasn’t impressed with that one at all. For example, I can turn down the volume on my LP and it cleans ups beautifully, while retaining the highs. The way it is wired has so much to with it. Personally, I think people tend to have a somewhat cliched view of Les Pauls because we all grew up with that Les-Paul-through-a-cranked-Marshall sound ingrained in our brains. They’re much more versatile than that. My brain prefers the sound of an LP for single-note lead playing, because the notes seem fuller and rounder. It just works better for me. I’m not talking about my playing, because I suck. I’m thinking more of someone like B.B. King (not an LP, but you get my drift) or Peter Green, or Mahavishnu Orchestra-era John McLaughlin, or even Slash. But don’t get me wrong because Fenders sound amazing too. It’s all good! I’ve actually been on a Roy Buchanan kick lately and it doesn’t get more Fender than that.😉

Single coils aren‘t noisy, they‘re hummy. Humbuckers are not called noisebuckers. The humbucker was not invented for sound reasons but for hum reduction. That’s a technical thing, not connected to the art of music. The price you pay: the high range overtones that make up for a rich inspiring sound. I once had a Strat with a humbucker at the bridge. With it’s coil split option it gave me a direct comparison. Instinctively I changed back to single coil whenever the humbucking was on. They sound so pulpy. Playing humbuckers is like painting a rainbow in the gray scale.

Isn't a Gibson 24.75? I like Josh fine.... but he should stick to showing technique not "tone" discussion like this. I don't think the strat has more clarity. A good lester from the 50s has clarity. They both sounded muddy to me. Fender is thinner in tone (less harmonics = thinner). To me that was because fender made cheap guitars (modular with cheaper components). It was only by accident when you plugged em into a marshall they drove the amp into a pleasant distortion. They were working guitars....Gibson definitely had a higher end demographic with set necks etc. Remember neither of these brands designed their guitars for the rock music that made them famous or what we are used to. That was by accident. They both are fantastic because we all love tones from them. But to say more clarity is a little odd. Clarity is subjective and very dependent upon amp settings etc. A good PAF will be just as clear if not clearer. People gravitate to fender and Gibson based on what their first guitar was and who their idols are and played. I suspect Josh had a fender style guitar when he started and possibly idolized a fender player to emulate. Josh is a great player.
