Joshua Tree National Park in the Southern Mojave Desert is full of wonder, is breathtaking, and has some unique features e. g. plants and geology.
Although it has a stunning beauty which appeals to to one's primeval nature, beware it's a harsh, hot high desert region.
Joshua Tree n.p. is potentially a dangerous environment with summer temperatures in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
On average two hikers die each year within the park.
Do not attempt hiking or participate in any other activities unless you are well prepared for survival in this extreme desert environment.
We spent an exceptionally interesting day exploring many sites which included several short hiking trails.
We consumed large quantities of water.
Unique Features within the Park:
Joshua Trees
1) Grow only in the Mojave Desert
2) They are not trees at all, they are actually a species of yucca.
3) They have an average life span if 150 years.
Cholla Cactus Gardens.
The park is home to the largest array of Cholla Cactus in the world. They are known as "Teddy Bear Cactus" but don't be fooled, their spines are toxic, containing poison which is harmful to animals and humans alike.
The Teddy Bear Cactus is the most dangerous plant in the park.
Geology
The park is renowned for it's masses of Monzogranite rock formations which geologists believe were born 100 thousand years ago.
Further geological information is available re the video soundtrack.
