Bird song and sounds originate in the syrinx, the vocal organ of birds. This video is constructed from CT scans from the syrinx of a swift, a type of small bird related to hummingbirds, and takes viewers on a journey from the top of the organ down to the bifurcated end. The tissues colored purple are the bird’s vocal folds. These folds produce the swift's distinctive barrage of chirps when they are vibrated by air expelled from the bird's lungs.
