Same Mary! I saw them in Buffalo, New York when I was just a kid--probably 17? Took my first plane trip from St. Louis to visit a friend. He surprised me with a ticket to a 4th of July show at the Bills' football stadium that included April Wine, Journey, Atlanta Rhythm Section, and the Stones. I walked to the front of the stage as there was little interest in Journey. Armed with my trusty Kodak x-15 (the one where the flash cubes turn after each use?) and was eye-to-eye with Steve Perry. He was striking poses for me throughout their set. I think I have the prints in a box somewhere in the basement. Great concert and experience! ; )

Setting the record straight here...I'm reading the comments here and there seems to be a lot of debating if those backing vocals are Steve Perry or not. While Perry WAS NOT on the original recording of Look Into the Future, this is a live cut from a concert in 1978, after Perry joined the band. So, yes, those are his vocals backing up Gregg Rollie.

Agreed - the marriage of Rollie's voice with Perry's is what gives their songs that added depth. Similar to the sounds created by combining an oboe (or alto sax) with a tenor saxophone... Not sure of Rollie's voice register (probably low tenor or baritone), but Perry is a tenor altino (a male alto!)

Take a closer listen from 7:00-7:30 particularly from 7:20-7:30 those are all Ainsley signature chops (from that period) when he had that huge double bass drum kit with all those toms. At that point his style was a cross between Cozy Powell, Neil Peart, Vinne Appice and a touch of Keith Moon if you can picture that and not have a drum seizure!! In my opinion he one of the greatest drummers of that era and sadly never seems to get the credit he so richly deserves (IMHO).

The original lead singer was Gregg Rolie, followed by Fleischman. He was with them for a while in 1977 and co-wrote "Wheel in the Sky", but didn't make it to the end of the year. Many fans were dissatisfied with the change and Fleischman was replaced that fall for Perry, who became co-lead with Rolie for Infinity, but by the next album had become the sole lead singer.

@HMACDONALD69 Also, his mother had been dead almost 10 years by then, and let's not forget that he sought them out to make Trial by Fire, so he obviously wanted to be there and be involved with Journey again. No one had to beg him, and he said in the Focus interview that they would most likely be making a summer tour, which he had to know would be a condition of making an album. What seems more likely is that with the album having charted at #3 he really thought they would wait for his surgery.

That issue of musical 'marriages' is one of the reasons that the music seems to be lacking something to me in the later Journey incarnations from Augeri on.
