Joy Division’s single Love Will tear us apart was released separately from the album Closer last time I checked. It’s crazy to think that none of the band members picked up on the warning signs, but in hindsight, they could see that he was seriously depressed and they weren’t just making catchy dance music.

A key element of both Joy Division albums is the production of Martin Hannett, who is responsible for the atmospherics and strange sounds.

He checked his mixes with tiny Aurotone speakers (to see what they sounded like on radios) Tannoy Monitor Golds for expensive systems and JBLs for home stereos. I’ve got his pair of JBLs and it’s strange hearing these albums on them. This video reveals new insights all these years later and I’ve dug them out again. The speakers are JBL TLX7 GI if you want to hear what Martin did after a day of mixing. Cheap as chips if they pop up second hand these days.

Decades is soul crushing, that song alone threw me into a depressive existential crisis in 2017. What really did it though were Ian’s lyrics. Complete depravity. Nothing left. I always interpreted it as musings of a restless soul after they’ve died. Lost, for eternity.

Another great video. Hard to believe that this album came out just over a year after Unknown Pleasures- as it is much more mature of an album and much more personal. It's no surprise that Ian Curtis had said to Bernard Sumner (guitarist for JD) that "Doing this album felt very strange because he felt that all his words were writing themselves. He had this terrible claustrophobic feeling that he was in a whirlpool and being pulled down, drowning." They have some great non-album singles (as you know from Love Will Tear Us Apart) that you should review/ look into such as: Transmission, Atmosphere, Dead Souls and Digital. Keep up the good work!

Started going to New Wave/Post punk clubs in March 1980, 2 months before Ian Curtis died, and this band became my instant favorite, and still is today. Love Will Tear Us Apart is the most famous song, and the song that got me hooked on them. But when this Closer album came out, I listened to it constantly. While I love most of their stuff, the last 4 songs on this album, Heart and Soul, Twenty Four Hours, The Eternal, and Decades definitely are my favorites. This album may be one of the most underrated albums of all time. RIP Ian.

It was very dark in Ian's head, there was a lot going on in there. He would hang himself before this album came out. A day or so before they were to come to the US. This album kicks me in the gut every time I listen to it in its entirety and I find it mentally draining but it is undoubtedly a masterpiece. It was Ian's epitaph as it was released after his death., You're right, Ian's cry's for help were not recognised sufficiently by the other band members and management at the time. They knew he was at risk but didn't intervene quick enough because of immaturity and the rock and roll life style. You are also right about the music being out of step with the lyrics, its incongruous in many ways but that tension is what makes it so gripping, unusual and unique. I agree those lines are searing "existence well what does it matter, I exist on the best terms I can, the past is now part of my future the present is well out of hand". In subsequent interviews, there has been a lot of soul searching, by the other band members and on reflection they have deeply regretted that they didn't do more.

They’re evolution into new order after ian passed is a logical transition but much much more melodic and synth heavy. New order has some of the most iconic and seminal 80s sounds and I couldn’t recommend them enough. The best place to start would probably be the second half of their ‘total’ compilation, but my favorite is power corruption and lies

1. I'll add my voice to the chorus of "don't forget to listen to the non-album studio cuts" - things like These Days, Atmosphere, Dead Souls, Something Must Break, Koma-kino, the alternative version of She's Lost Control...and so on. Including the rougher stuff from '77-'78 (yes, even the punk numbers like At A Later Date are, at worst, fun, and at best, hinting at what's to come). 2. Joy Division's music may avoid being genuinely depressing by raging, kicking too much ass to be capital-D Dark, but still...This is the first time I've seen a music reviewer really get affected by Ian's lyrics. But it's also the first time I've seen a reviewer genuinely pay attention to them. 3. We all know the story of how, even as Ian's health and personal life deteriorated, the band and the management either tuned out the lyrics or chose to view them as just poetry. The anxiety, guilt, bitterness and contemplation of suicide are there for all to hear/read. Also, you probably know the story of his hypnotherapy session where he was convinced he was flashing back to previous incarnations, and also described viewing the world as a dead/unbodied person. That last bit probably inspired the song In A Lonely Place which JD made rough demos of before New Order recorded it properly.

I am truly surprised that you actually liked Joy Division. In my own experiences, it's a VERY acquired taste. After Unknown Pleasures and Closer, there were a few compilation albums released after Ian's death called Still and Substance. Plus, I'd also like to see your opinions on the original Joy Division recordings of Ceremony and In a Lonely Place. If you thought the first two albums were depressing, these two songs, without a doubt, are the darkest songs because they were recorded just weeks if not days before Ian's suicide.

After Ian's death, and the release of 'Closer' and 'Love Will Teat Us Apart', the band formed New Order, and continued with Martin Hannett, releasing two songs that Joy Division were working on; 'Ceremony' and 'In A Lonely Place'(possibly the most depressing song Ian sang), After this, New Order and Hannett released 'Procession', 'Everything Gone Greet', then their first LP. These are post-Ian songs are like a brief continuation of Joy Division.

Lucked out and you were suggested. What a set of two records. A concise document of growth from a Iggy punk band, that digested a bit of Kraftwerk and Neu, yet still sounded completely like themselves. Ian Curtis listened to some Sinatra records to get in that crooning frame of mind and it shows. Glad you "enjoyed" them as much as I did when they first came out. Suggestions- The Fall, Hex Enduction Hour-1982, or This Nations Savings Grace-1985. The Fall is a band most Americans ignored, but they can become an obsession.
