I have yet to see this film--how did I miss it??!! Still, it captures something most people who have never fronted a band will never understand: on stage you are alone. No matter how tight you may be with your band mates, no matter how many allies you have in the audience, all that exists is the music and what it does to you. Ian Curtis was the embodiment of that dark phenomena

I didn't watch the film. Peter Hook said Ian would tell you he was fine even if he wasn't, however... I don't know if Ian: 1: Lied; 2: Thought he was great although he wasn't; 3: Was great _in the moment you asked;_ 4: Thought he was great because he was going to kill himself (but didn't tell _you_ why he thought he was great;) 5: Just put on a show for even his bandmates; acted like nothing was wrong _for your benefit_ even if there was plenty wrong. 5b; Reason for 5: Maybe he didn't feel as though he could explain what he was going through, maybe he felt lonesome despite having fans and maybe he just plain gave up and gave in.

I agree. Joy Division was really before my time, so I had only heard the NIN version. I fell in love with the song when I heard NIN do it; I thought it was a NIN original. Then, out of curiosity, I saw Control on a DVD shell at my library and checked it out. As soon as I heard this song playing over the opening menu, I was like, "That song sounds familiar." (LOL!). Now I love both versions. I'm glad I discovered the original, even if it took watching a movie to do it.

Little nitpick: Dead Souls was one of several Joy Division songs sped up in post, raising the pitch half a step up from what was recorded (other songs that do this include Colony and Ice Age). Interesting thing for the actors to learn the song in the "studio key" (half a step up - as indicated by the guitarist's hand position at 0:52) whereas in real life, the band would have played it half a step lower.

I remember it was this scene, maybe even this exact video you uploaded, that piqued my interest in Joy Division beyond Love Will Tear Us Apart. Originally, I believe some of the band scenes from this film and the one HQ live session of Joy Division that's out there, I thought were indistinguishable when first becoming familiar with Joy Division. Speaks to the level of dedication that not only the actors but the filmmakers themselves put into this movie, that someone unaware with what the band sounded and looked like couldn't tell the film from the real thing.

I know that the use of Black and White in the movie is to transmit the darkness and seriousness of the story, but i think that the epilepse attack scene would have worked better if they added color. Let's remember that Ian got that attack not only by the pressure but for the lights of the stage that were bothering him. Anyway that scene, of how the camera starts to cut to Ian desesperatingly dancing and sudenly cutting by a very wild way is preety excelent.

Oh hell. The pain is so obvious. I was never really into Joy Division, or later New Order, so although I bought every issue of NME and Melody Maker, I might have only glossed over stuff about them at the time. What sadness I get now, finding out more about Ian Curtis. About an illness he couldn’t control. I hadn’t known about his severe epilepsy until today. I only knew the music. His epilepsy treatments didn’t work for him and it seems worsened his depression. It’s just heartbreaking. I really hope that the treatments for epilepsy have improved since this poor tortured young man ended his life.
