As an adopted Asian American growing up in a predominately white suburb, I feel this. Funny enough, I remember facing racism like this as a child. Two kids were calling me “China Man” (even though I’m Korean) and one of them knelt behind me while the other pushed me over. I went crying to my dad and told him what happened and he told me not to come crying and to stand up for myself. I walked directly up to the kid who pushed me and punched him square in the nose. Maybe not the best way of solving conflict in hindsight, but yeah… totally felt this opening scene.

Fellow adopted Asian-American here! I watched the movie with my mom and told her after the opening scene how excited I was that a movie like this even exists. Growing up, I couldn't find stories in movies, books, or TV that connected to this part of my life or upbringing. My brother was adopted from another Asian country and we experienced a lot of bullying and ignorant questions about our ethnicities/adoptions. But our mom was always proud of us for standing up for ourselves. She cheered when Lolo punched the boy in his face!

This is messed up for me to say but you bore your soul a bit, so what the hell. I always hoped I was adopted. That one day my birth parents would show up, or they’d say there was a mixup with another baby. For context I was shy, quiet, reserved and wanted peace. Kind of hard to find in a loud, proud, Chicano familia. I was also ALWAYS told I “looked” Asian, so I held out hope for that. You were very fortunate, you were chosen, hand selected. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

I’m an adopted South Korean who was born in Seoul and both my parents are Swedish. So blonde hair and blue eyes 😂 as are all my cousins, uncles and aunts, etc. I grew up in rural Missouri until I was about 16 when we moved to New England. Ironically I had an exponentially more difficult time in New England than Missouri in terms of dealing with idiots or slight racism. Although both of my parents are not violent nor are they confrontational I learned at an early age that when idiots say things of this nature eventually they’ll try to do something physical to you. So just skip all that pushing and in your face nonsense and tune them up.

I agree with what you're saying I would add this to if This was an American in a China. He would be told he needs to respect the culture and that he's acting disrespectful. Remember the karate kid with Jayden Smith? That kid was beaten up and bullied throughout the entire movie and yet he was told that he needed to show respect. Play Asians and other foreigners in American movies are told to hack even worse than the people around them.
