“If the American people ever allow private banks and corporations to control the issue of their money, first buy inflation, and then buy deflation these banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive people of their property until their children wake up, homeless on the continent, their fathers conquered”. Tensions had been building since the early 1900s when Japan's focus was on building up its military firepower and becoming a world leader. There were a few key events namely: the U.S. brokering a peace deal between Russia and Japan after the Russia-Japanese war, the opposition of the League of Nations to recognize Japan's control over Manchuria (China), and the U.S. involvement in trying to limit the ability of Japan to expand its empire in the 1930s (with some help other western powers). All in all, during the lead-up to WW2 Japan, was the only superpower in the west. They had defeated the Russians, taken over Korea and China, and focused their sights on taking over European-controlled islands/counties in the Pacific. Being so close by, they saw the U.S. as their #1 roadblock to fulfilling these goals. Their military leaders also thought that Pearl Harbor would lead to the U.S. retreating from further conflict, but boy were they wrong 😁 If interested check out the docuseries Impossible Peace for more info on the leadup to WW2 and Price of Empire (covers the events of WW2 in detail from 1937 to 1946)
