I have two theories regarding this. 1: Orcas teach their young how and what to hunt. It's possible that they won't eat humans for the same reason you wouldn't just eat some random berries you couldn't identify out in the woods, they don't know if we're safe to eat, so they just don't eat us. The other theory (the one I want to believe) is that they recognize us as intelligent, highly sociable animals, just like them, and refuse to hunt us because they find the idea morally repugnant. The second one sounds ridiculous, but Orcas in captivity absolutely understand the hierarchy and social dynamics between their human trainers, and have even exploited these social dynamics to manipulate their handlers. I would go as far as to say that they are as intelligent as we are, they are just stuck in the hunter/gatherer stage of their development because they lack the physical ability to build and manipulate tools.

Southern residents teeth are shaped so that they can eat fish. Longer/thinner. The orcas which eat mammals have rounder teeth so they can crush the bones. A southern resident would have difficulties physically eating a mammal. Also the technique to catch a seal on the shore has to be taught. It is a learned behavior.🐬

I think, orcas, and dolphins somehow think we’re another species of them because living in Florida I can tell you a dolphin, will come right up to the boat or a dock and say hello to you. you just have to see it for yourself, sort of like how a pet dog comes up to its owner.

Don't really buy the theory of pods just eating chinook salmon. I have lived and fished for them in the pacific northwest for many years. The salmon congagrat at the mouth of rivers in the spring and fall to spawn. The rest of the time they travel vast distances feeding. If the pod stayed in the Seattle area they would starve most of the year.
