This month I finished SMT4:A and started playing the FF9 port on the switch. SMT4:A was pretty darn good, with it having amazing music and similar (but improved in various aspects) gameplay to the original SMT4. I would say the story and characters aren’t really the best part of this game, but I will say that people make them out to be worse than they really are. As for FF9, I’m really enjoying it so far. I’m still near the beginning sections of the game, but I’ve been having fun.

Always like your monthly videos. It's a nice check-up reflection/inspection for the time sinks that is the JRPG. I got through I Am Setsuna this last month - and 100%'d it. That is a game with a unique mood. Not a bleak or dire mood. Just. Winter-y. Somber. Always nice to get through a JRPG, since I WANT TO DO THEM, but they're a big commitment of my month. I'm trying Oninaki next. Not sure if I'll finish before it leaves PS extra. It's got a similar somberness but is interesting. The new Prince of Persia side-scroller is also a top-ten metroidvania and ate a good chunk of my last month. Seriously. I've played a lot of these kind of games. This game is sick-city, it's so good for that genre. I've been curious about trying a Neptunia game, but it looks so C-tier that I'd rather aim for other games first. I've wanted to play Granblue fantasy for years, but when it came out, I just haven't had the time. I also still haven't gotten to the Yuffie/intergrade DLC and want to squeeze it in before Rebirth. Dunno if I'll have time for that until March, at this rate.

I'd still recommend to at least try out any Neptunia game as they're still fun little distractions from the bigger JRPGs Plus, if you love referential humor, this series takes a jab at the whole gaming industry and it works like a charm

Don't burn yourself out! I'd rather only see one video per month than no videos at all! In January I played a little bit of Spiderman to get all of the trophies since I started it during Christmas. I got addicted to Roots of Pacha since I finally got un-stuck in the caves. Played a lot of Baldurs Gate 3 as well, which I almost finished now. I played Child of Light to finish a small game from my backlog. In order to prepare for February, I started Crisis Core Reunion. I preordered LaD: Infinite Wealth. But I haven't played any of the games in the series, so I decided to start Yakuza: Like a Dragon from my backlog first. I won't be able to finish that before FF7 Rebirth hits. And I also want to start Trails From Zero (and will probably start Azure right after) so I'm set for the next couple of months. I'm sad I'm having to skip P3 Reload, Granblue Fantasy Relink, Dragons Dogma 2 and Unicorn Overlord, but I just don't see how to play all of them right now. Also, my new years resolution is to buy fewer new games and reduce my backlog a bit, so aside from Trails, there's also Tales of Berseria, Dragon Quest 11, Atelier Ryza, several Ys games and Chained Echoes on my list for this year. I'm enjoying Yakuza: Like a Dragon a lot currently! It's a nice mix of serious main quest, with goofy side quests and a huge amount of interesting mini games.

In anticipation of Granblue I didn’t want to commit to anything too much in January so it gave me the perfect window to platinum Atelier Marie. Was fun seeing the roots of the series as I’ve only played the more recent games like Ryza and Mysterious. Just finished the main story of Granblue and now onto the intense post game grinding and dabbling a bit into Resna as well while trying to decide what to move onto next. Right now the next releases I’m looking forward to are the next Trails game in summer and Ys X in the fall so have a good amount of time to work on backlog.

Around the end of January I got back in my Trails series playthrough. I'm currently playing Trails From Zero and I'm really liking the new cast of characters and how some of the loose ends from Trails in the Sky are addressed in this game. And it's nice seeing returning cast from Sky in this game. I'm also getting through the story of Resleriana (very slowly). I'm really impressed with the graphics and I am enjoying the story so far. Resna is also a fun protagonist, and I can't wait to get to the part where she meets Valeria. I tried a bit of the Persona 3 remake but so far it hasn't made much of an impression on me, but then I am biased towards the original as it was my first Persona game. For the rest of the month, I'm going to continue my Trails playthrough and maybe start Azure right after Zero but then FFVII Rebirth is coming out soon and I haven't even played the Yuffie DLC, so I don't know if I will start Rebirth anytime soon (I want to replay Remake too). I also got Granblue Fantasy Relink which I want to play sometime this year as I have heard good things about it (I have played the mobile version but never got far into the story). Thanks for the video and I give my recommendation for Trails in the Sky.

The more I think about it, "Nep SvS" really is in a bit of a weird position. It's a spin-off but, unlike the other numerous spin-offs, it's also kinda-sorta a mainline entry. A lot of its story and mechanics are directly related to those prior mainline entries, making it not immediately accessible to most people on the outside. The story references plenty of events and characters, "MK2/Re;Birth2" especially. And the combat is almost just the regular turn-based gameplay but in real-time instead. More action-ized instead of pure action if that makes sense. Though you do unlock more abilities (combo routes, step canceling, etc) as you progress so it gradually becomes more plainly action. Though still, those beginning hours must be really awkward if you weren't already familiar with the mainline games. Oh well, I'm just glad enough that people are apparently finding something to enjoy about the game. To say the reception of it, and the series in general, is quite poor among most JRPG channels would be quite the understatement.

I knew enough about the girls from Producing Perfection (that I also played on a whim) to get enjoyment out of it; I think if you see it as just banter it can be enjoyed without the context, at least for me :33 Interesting to hear more about where SvS sits in the series. Scrolling through my PlayStation Library recently, I saw I have the first ReBirth, so I should really try take this as a reminder to get to it (on top of all the other games I want to get to, but you know haha) Thanks for the insights :))
@shadowmaksim

@@JRPGJungle Speaking of mainline entries with weird spots in the series, "Re;Birth1" is also a bit of an oddity. Due to the original being the first game, it had a story that was conclusively self-contained and didn't really offer much in terms of a direct sequel. And "Re;Birth1" (as well as "ReVerse") kept it that way despite remaking the story. So starting with "MK2"/"Re;Birth2", they essentially act as reboots. General overarching plot points did still happen but more as background details. Another big difference is the geography of the world was changed, went from floating landmasses to regular islands. So, uh, yeah. Still a good entry to jump into but it's not exactly directly followed up on. Just something to be aware of I guess. There is a kinda-sorta explanation but nothing explicit. As you can tell, the continuity of the series is a bit finnicky. Thankfully the rest of the mainline entries are mostly just straightforward, it's just the first entry being weird.

Title had me thinking it was still January. Lol. I've actually played quite a few "JRPGs" since January. Started that month by finishing off Yakuza Like a Dragon and Yakuza 3, both of which were low points of the series in several ways. Then tried out Indivisible since it was on PS Plus Extra, but dropped it because it ended up being too cringeworthy; I think those who liked Sea of Stars would like that game though. Played Doki Doki Literature Club and could not for the life of me understand why it was so highly regarded. Thinking about it from a meta perspective did make me appreciate it just a little bit though. The big one was of course Persona 3 Reload, which is easily my GOTY thus far. I actually hit the Twitter thread limit when writing my review for it. Lol. It becomes such a good game from the 20 hour point. I sacrificed many hours of sleep thinking it would be longer and trying to finish it before the FF7 Rebirth demo update, haha.

Man, you exemplified perfectly why I'll never touch a gacha game. The gacha itself (which I don't like) isn't even the main issue. It's the way it sucks your time from what you'd rather be doing. As for me, last month I played and beat Tales of Berseria, Gurumin, Zwei 1, and Xanadu Next. I just beat P3R last night and gonna try Soul Hackers 2 for most of the rest of the month.

My brother asked me this the other day and I didn’t know what to say haha I’d say intermediate I guess? For Res for example, I can understand what’s going on in the Japanese version fine and then can confirm that understanding in the English version while also getting the more nuanced points I missed. Fluency depends on the situation - simple everyday stuff like going to the shops I can do cause I have to daily (occasionally something will pop up, but I can get around it for the most part). More complicated stuff though (anything legal, math, science, even really high fantasy stuff) is still no good lol Atelier is good for my level - it’s a little higher with the fantasy stuff, but the girls use a lot of simple language too, so I can get around it :3 hope that answers your question! :3

@StephenDickerman not so much actually. It very much depends on the area. If you’re in a really tourist friendly place (like Shibuya or somewhere), someone can probably help if you have a problem or don’t know what to say. But even in Tokyo or nearby, there are plenty of people who don’t know/haven’t studied English recently, so yeah :3 I wouldn’t say it’s necessary for tourists though, people seem to get by with nothing so yeah :)) there are a lot of signs in English since the Olympics and with phones with translate, maps, etc, it’s all pretty manageable :33

Outside of Prince of Persia The Lost Crown on PS4, which is a great Metroidvania game as well as an impressive revival of a dormant franchise, I barely played any J/RPG during January as I mostly focused on finishing the Demon Slayer manga. I didn't even have time to finish my December plans too, so February will pick up the slack for me lol. Going back on my 3DS for the Mario&Luigi game I mentioned last time and then going old-school with Dragon Quest 3 on my Switch to wrap up the month. While not gaming, I was mostly focused on reading Alice in Borderland, Biomega and Phoenix (an oldie but goldie IMO) on my daily work commutes and whenever I wasn't feeling like playing any game during my free time. Also, as I'm waiting patiently for the next volume of the Final Fantasy Lost Stranger manga to come out, I was planning to get back to the franchise with FF9 on Switch (using mostly the added cheats to FINALLY finish it after more than 20 years) and World of FF on PSVita first (I got so sidetracked I forgot where I'm currently in the story lol) before moving on down the FF backlog. Speaking of the manga, I do in fact recommend it for fans of the franchise and for those of the Isekai genre. Happy gaming, everyone!
