Amazingly useful - thank you! 01:26 Tip & Feedback: The blue plot is merely a default target ("long-term reference") spectrum of some kind - not determined from the current track(s). Not realising this, at this stage (having never seen this plugin before) threw my attention / made me replay previous. Not complaining, just proposing a "pop up text" to indicate that. What does the default spectrum represent? (dialogue m/f, music, average/median of everything?)

In my experience, this Spectrum Matcher is the most reliable Spectrum Matcher I ever tried, but in non-Reaper DAWs (I often use ReaPlugs in Fairlight) it's not possible to save presets. Example: Fairlight gives you the "save preset" option ONLY for its stock plugins, not for "external" plugins. Having a "save preset" button INSIDE the Spectrum Matcher would be a solution. Up to know I'm forced to use Spectrum Matcher inside DDMF Metaplugin just to save the presets.

@@geraintluff Thanks for your quick reply, You are a VERY kind person! Well, to be honest, Fairlight is the worst DAW I ever tried, and it lacks so many useful features. Of course it's not possible to save the track template... IMO, the only option to avoid using a plugin wrapper (Metaplugin) to save S.M. presets is to add the "save preset" feature to ReaJS. @geraintluff

Yeah - it's just a hard-clip! It should only make a difference if your output signal is significantly above 0dB. I ideally should put a little light on there or something to say when you've hit that limit, because you're not really meant to...

Guitar should be fine. Of all the things I tested during development, vocals were the most interesting/tricky because even for the same singer with similar expression, they contain a wide range of timbres for all the different vowels and consonants, which is why I used them for the demo. I would expect most instruments to have a more consistent timbre than vocals, although there are definitely variations with dynamics/pitch. If you match some gentle moody piano against rocking as hard as possible, or a pop guitar solo against a chugging 7-string, you won't get a timbre that sounds "the same".

I wonder if this is picky enough to match guitar EQ? People take a match EQ and match the tone of a given guitar sound. I need to play with this thing. So crazy that this is in JS. Complex and interesting.
@geraintluff

This tool can analyse things to about 1/4 octave resolution, which was good enough for my mixing tasks. I suspect the peaks and gaps of a guitar amp might be more detailed than that, and the auto-correction uses even more gentle slopes, so if the analyser could keep up you'd have to dial the corrections in an EQ by hand. But let know if you try it!

Is there any way to invert the filter that's created matching the reference track's frequency response? For example, what if what you'd like to do is cut the frequencies in your target track, so they don't clash with the frequencies in the reference track? I know that's not exactly the goal of the script. But thought it might be something that's possible to do.

I really like the idea of dynamically matching the EQ instead of doing it statically to the target - however, it seems here the EQ profile of the reference is a static nevertheless. Would it be possible to extract a dynamic EQ profile from the reference against which the dynamic EQ of the target is matched? Of course this will probably not make much sense if the reference and target have different contents, but in case they are the same song, this would be a really desirable step forward. Would you please let me know your thought? Thanks
@geraintluff
6 жыл бұрын
Definitely possible, but different enough to be a separate effect. That seems slightly similar to a vocoder (although two-input vocoders usually ignore the spectrum of one input, and just modulate it with the other). What kind of inputs would you want to use as the target?
@geraintluff
6 жыл бұрын
If you were thinking that your target/input would be a simple synth, that's very close to what Humonica can do (it re-uses the spectrum of its audio input, and applies that to a new synthesised sound according to its MIDI input): kzitem.info/news/bejne/xoqf3XxucWifdJgm18s
@Jazzzzzzzxxxzz

I really like your Humonica and it definitely blew my mind away. This is an awesome tool. However, the specific user case I have in hand seems very different from what perhaps you have in mind: I am trying to remaster a 1939 Furtwangler recording. Those made in that era are usually terribly bad in EQ and I am trying to apply different EQ filters to different parts (based on matching a reference modern day recording section-by-section) depending on what instruments dominate (eg. a section dominated by strings need a different EQ filter than a section dominated by brass which is then different than a section dominated by woodwind) but this gets really complicated and tricky since transition is very unnatural and abrupt at junctures as one crosses from one filter to another. Therefore, I am looking for a dynamic EQ matching algorithm/software able to smoothly match EQ to a reference recording in a localized yet continuous manner. Would you remotely know what on earth can do this? Thanks!
I basically tried to match my string instrument track to sound like a well mixed string loop wav file I have. But it adds so much highend to my instrument track sounding like there's a bunch of clipping going on when there is none. I played the same notes in the same register as the loop but it does not come out as the loop sounds. Can you enlighten me on what's going on? Thank you.

@@geraintluff thank you for the reply . I realise now that I should have worded my question differently. My question is , are all "EQ matching" softwares pretty much the same ? Like, is eq matching a very standard, well defined procedure and do all the softwares that do it, have the same algorithm ? If yes, then this will mean that all such softwares are more or less the same and that there will not be more than 5-10% difference between the result from one such software and that of another . Or, is it the case that the results from one software can vary a lot from the result of another "EQ matching" software .
@geraintluff

Probably not identical, but it's not a very complicated idea, so I'd expect a lot of similarities in the solutions. I couldn't say for sure though, I'm afraid - I only know how I made mine, not what's inside anyone else's. 🤷
