I wouldn't say the 2203 is necessarily better sounding than a JTM. The added gain stage gives it another level of tube compression even when set clean, and that's a matter of preference. I like the JTM bass-style tone stack for rhythm sounds, but I also prefer the less compression and clearer highs of KT66 tubes over EL34. I don't think EL34 work as well with a JTM. I also don't consider the JMP an evolution as much as James Marshall pandering to a market dominated by angry young boneheads, but the smoother sound of the 2203 was an improvement.

great camera mic by the way, it gives you a very good idea of what it sounds like in the room.

Nice work, as always, Jason. I like how you put the two 68K grid stoppers on the tube socket. Great idea. I don't know why I never thought of that! A big problem with someone else's kit is the quality of their wiring and how they've done their grounds. You don't want the amp going out with your sticker on it with shit wiring, and on the other hand, a customer may get upset at what he sees as expensive cosmetic work. The wiring from the tone stack to the bias is pretty crook.

I've found a great way to use those input jack holes for small 6mm switches. That Bright cap in a switch is a must, and also the DS "gain structure " switch!

Oh they got used alright, but outside the scope of this clip.

Was it just the camera mic because in 2204 mode it seemed like it didn’t have as much gain is most 2204s?

You mention, I believe, John Suhr's book but I can't seem to find it online. What's the name of that book please?

Great vid Jase. Did you mod it like a modded 2203/4 with a little more gain or is it like a stock 2203/4 would be from factory in terms of gain?

It was stock in the clip, but I did end up putting some switchable gain options into the unused input jacks....!

I'm glad you do these videos. Since watching your videos, I've made up with Dave Friedman, and come to see that tube amps are more than just something to hold the door open while you bring your Helix in from the gig. Just kidding. But I am beginning to understand the magic. I'm curious as to your thoughts on guitar volume pots. Do you favor one brand over another? Linear or Audio taper? Or "Vintage taper?"

Hey Ben! Audio taper for sure. I haven't really got into the rabbit hole of guitar pots, I just use whatever the guitar came with and only replace if changing the value or the pot fails. I do like those zero friction pots on the EVH guitars, they are killer.

@@HeadfirstAmps LIFEHACK: Take a drop of 3n1 g*n oil and drop it into the open portion of the pot. Turn the pot back and forth several times to distribute and you have a low friction pot. I have pots that are 20 years old that I have done that too and they have held up fine. I was worried in the beginning that the oil would delaminate the contact strips but it does not. Just be sure to remove any residue before soldering.

That just reduces AC ripple more, right? Some ripple can have a sort of smoothing effect on the highs, but I'd want to achieve that through other methods i.e. smoother S-curve, if possible, or just reducing odd-order distortion.
