Being able to retain her own attorney and bond out immediately on a $100K cash/surety bond seems to indicate she has more money than brains, along with zero accountability for her actions. That would seem to be the root of the entire problem - she felt entitled enough to say nothing to the authorities and just hope the whole thing went away on it's own.

no, that's just a coward in panic mode. She might have thought to get away with it (foolish), but it wasn't because of $. It was because of selfishness and cowardness. STOP is what she should have done. TURNED HER SELF IN when she was sober, short of stopping at the scene. There's so much that is going wrong for her and she brought it on herself, but not because of money. Self preservation, self entitlement, cowardice, poisoned thinking (alcohol, drugs), not wanting to take responsibility as a human adult, simply acting like a 12 year old in an adult body...etc. Not money. Bond money was not an issue they had the bond money they had the bondsman there so they knew they could pay it she's got a good attorney not a public defender this was just merely the court adding bond which costs her 5,000 bucks that she will never get back to go to the bond company. Regardless of how guilty she looks or how much evidence they have she is still innocent until proven guilty and that is the most powerful statement here. She was going to show up to court. Additional bond money was not protected the public in any way. That being said based on the offense alleged when somebody dies the bond should be higher than what would be typical for something else with the same penalty. But the judge did shoot across the attorney's foul so to speak and the attorney did not catch on nearly quick enough but after watching dozens of this awesome judge he was granting that before the defense attorney ever spoke. But the defense attorney has the obligation and duty to argue the best zealous defense for his client he can regardless of what the court thinks.

In 2018 in Indiana, a 25-year-old woman plowed into three kids trying to board a school bus. They were siblings: sister was nine, her twin little brothers were six. An 11-year-old was critically injured and has had multiple surgeries. Her sentence? Four years in prison, three years of house arrest and then three years of probation. The children’s mother was so grief-stricken and horrified by the four-year sentence that she lunged at the woman and was subsequently handcuffed and hauled away; they charged her with misdemeanor battery. There was no justice for those children and there will probably be no justice for the poor dead woman in this case. Something needs to change.

And her friend told two stories, too, so that must mean it's okay for the defendant to have two stories. Really, your honor, you didn't argue about the bond before, back when you didn't know she deleted the text messages, so if it's too little it's kinda your fault anyway. When I was a kid (around 1965) in Chicago, my father drove extremely drunk several times, with my brothers and me in the back seat. The one time he was stopped, he had run up onto the sidewalk and crashed into a newspaper box. The cops told him the car was drivable, and we were only a few miles from home ... so they waved him on and said, "Just be more careful, sir. Have a good night."

@@KCGeno Sounds about right. Back then the BAC was .15! Hard to believe but true. And DUI used to be just a citation. A minor thing. My grandfather got several DUIs in Texas in the 50s and I don't think he ever did any time in jail.

Juries and the public at large don't want drunk drivers on the road. Too bad our legislators instilled such weak laws that make a first time DUI a misdemeanor. Harsher charges and punishments might go further towards discouraging this epidemic of stupidity in this day and age.

I don't think he was trying to start a fight with Simpson but Simpson is a prickly guy. He was trying to make a rhetorical flourish. Most judges probably would've let it slide. In the end, it didn't matter. Simpson isn't going to raise a defendant's bond because the lawyer is a dickhead. He has to defend it legally.
@Veldrusara

@@scottmccrea1873 No judge that isn't a limp doormat would have let it slide. He not only repeated the same law about bond amounts as written in three different contexts in three different ways, but all that while placing special emphasis on the words "SHALL NOT" in a way that was blatantly threatening him if he didn't justify his ruling in his Own Court of Justice. That's demanding that a judge take accountability for their rulings before a ruling has even been made when they're the ruler of the roost. It's analogous to telling a king who's ruled a kingdom for as long as anyone can remember, "Be sure to not suck at your job." right before he actively carries out a particular duty. It's absurd. If he wasn't trying to start a fight, he's just more stupid than belligerent. Neither is professional nor does anyone any good.

She doesn't have a record of alcohol abuse -save when she knows she's positively drunk and drives anyway. She's always showed up -save when a simple phone call could've saved a life. No risk flight -save when she kills someone. Some lawyers, really. 😅

Career Detention Officer: If it wasn't for drinking and drugs, the majority of us wouldn't have a job. In 2020 I personally knew 14 people that died as a direct result of alcohol. However, I only personally knew one person that died from complications from Covid. (by complications, they also had other medical issues that Covid affected) The point is not to say that people didn't pass away from Covid (of course they did), but to point out that in 2020-2021, almost 500 people died each day in the US from excessive alcohol use. But no one likes to talk about that. From the CDC: "Excessive alcohol use was responsible for about 178,000 deaths in the United States each year during 2020-2021, or 488 deaths per day."

If it wasn't for substance abuse jails would still be run by most states instead of now being run privately and making big profits while under paying and under training "their corrections officers" while taxpayers are still footing the bills. The private run jails, like GEO, hire people who have no business being LEO's let alone correction officers. Unfortunately in America, the broken justice system will always provide *job security* for jails and prisons ... as we have some of the highest incarceration populations.

Too bad she couldn’t be held without bond. Disgusting and vile woman.

@@Comfortdoll My understanding is the ONLY person who might possibly have known where the victim "might" be is Sara the roommate. Even though Sara saw that person walking it would not necessarily mean that was the one she hit, or Sara making that immediate connection. Unless she specifically told others EXACTLY where she might have hit someone, I would imagine that would not narrow down the scene. If I told my brother I hit someone driving home from his house.... that's still 15 miles of rural area to check and would depend "which route" home I took. That would be a lot of ground to cover... just saying.

Drunk driving is often misunderstood as to whether the defendant willfully intended to harm or kill a person. THe key to understand this argument is intent. bond is nothing more then security for public safety and or deterrence. A defendants history should answer this question whether bond is necessary.

In short, the defense attorney alleged that during a previous hearing, the judge wrongfully used information that wasn't presented by the DA or the Defense . Judge Simpson quickly gave him a stern explanation of what "judicial notice" is all about. 😂 I am surprised, however, that after the determination in the previous hearing, the defense, believing there may have been some abuse of discretion by the judge, didn't ask to approach the bench to inquire. That's how you find out, off the record, without pissing off the judge. This makes me wonder if the defense was trying to embarrass the judge with a gotcha moment, but instead, Judge Simpson played a Uno Reversal card.

Unless your words turn onto action. Don't talk about be about it. Live what I preach. My life has chang3d to the better so much. To some, it's a simple concept.
