Little does Col Lawson know is that Judy's husband is a former SS member, Major Hochstetter.

Not only superb acting but the way this scene is filmed: until she speaks, Judy Garland is in shadow. Later when the two men are arguing she is placed right between them, showing how she is pulled in two different directions.

It's nice to know that Judy got another chance at a good dramatic role, after they butchered the final cut of A Star Is Born.

Fabulous film! I didn’t remember or realize in the past that Howard Caine had been in this film. He was a great actor. Judy Garland was a legend, of course, and Richard Widmark was a good enough actor, as well. Good to see Howard Caine in a different role here from “Hogan’s Heroes.”

it's always fascinating to see Caine, as well as Werner Klemperer, John Banner, and Leon Askin in dramatic roles. They were all as brilliant in dramatic roles as they were in comedic roles. The most bizarre is perhaps John Banner as camp commandant of Auschwitz, the exact opposite of Schulze.

It seems that Howard Cain’s character was an anti-Nazi or at least apathetic towards them. If he wasn’t, he would not have married a woman who got in trouble for being friends with a Jewish man.

Not apathetic perhaps, but practical. There were a great many people after the war who while they weren't nazis (or even sympathizers) just wanted it to be over. They were Germans, and they didn't like the idea of their countrymen (whatever their crimes) being pursued by outsiders. The fact that the allies had their own agenda, and that agenda didn't always stay limited to justice didn't help matters. When we ask ourselves how Russians can support Putin, for instance, this scene actually is quite instructive...
