That is the problem with jiu-jitsu today, a majority of bjj/jj gyms focus less on the throws, takedowns, takedown defense and more on submissions, guards and guard passes. If they started on their asses most likely the bjj guy would win, problem there is how many fights start that way? Also in a real fight if someone came at me on the ground butt scooting towards me I would just walk away. I have a little insight, my gym I've been training at since I started Muay Thai has had UFC champions, adcc competitors, bkfc contenders. I have talked with many pros. This is what they have shared and I have seen personally. I've been training Muay Thai (13 years), BJJ (1.5 years), and Judo (4 years).

BJJ is just culturally appropriated Judo. That's why all the basic moves have Japanese names and origins. The reason why Judo faded out is because of their own initiative of toning it down for Olympics. And it still continues because just 2 decades ago Judo still had leg attacks like FS wrestling but they stupidly removed that too. That's like half of the Judo stand up game removed for a silly sporting event that's becoming obsolete anyways.

I presume that you mean the competitional ju-jitsu. The "real" ju-jitsu precedes judo, or differently said, judo is a part of ju-jitsu (together with the punching part) - although if I remember the "stories", judo was invented as a separate type of fighting based on throws (and not strikes) and incorporated in the existing ju-jitsu arsenal of the time. But we're getting pedantic :) Simply said: ju-jitsu is (was?) a lot more complex/complete; judo as a separate "non-strike only" martial art appeared later. (And Aikido a lot later.) And all of them evolved (were simplified?) to today's competitional sports. Even today there are some parts in ju-jitsu that are not in judo, I don't mean striking but different arm or leg torsions (some of which may be found in aikido).

The bloke training my kids has a black belt in 3 sports (with cherries on top), he’s struggling to walk around with a busted back, knees and shoulders but he still manages to throw his opponents with little effort. He just switches from judo techniques to ju-jitsu or something else without even thinking about it. But what I consider the most impressive is that he can switch off the “illegal” techniques depending on the discipline he’s teaching.

I would note that at the highest level both arts have very explosive black belts, but because of the time limitations that competition judo puts on newaza, even mid-level and hobbiest black belts tend to bring very explosive techniques. They also hone particular combinations off their favorite throws as seen here. If they don't just yeet that arm the ref will stand them back up. This leads to there being an intensity difference at the hobbiest and mid level of black belts that favors judo, particularly if the bjj player can not establish grips or guard.

While take downs and throws are certainly a part of BJJ my experiencing in observing training in BJJ schools is that 90+ % of training is inground fighting, What was really impressive is that the Judo Black belt was so fast in passing the black belts guard and submitting him. If the match had started with both fighters seated it would probably ended the same way. BJJ is nothing more than Ne-Waza... The ground grappling side of Judo. The Judo Player was very adept at it.

The key difference is speed and temperment. BJJ guys almost always the more relaxed, slower grapplers. Judo competition is faster and you can't stall. This is the same pinciple that saw Ronda Rousey finishing (less) expereinced grapplers in seconds in MMA. Their mindset is to fight there way into a fight or graplle for position. Hers was to burst into the dominant position/finish as soon as possible. Each discipline has it's strengths and weaknesses.

BJJ really has a hole in the takedown dept. I’ve seen mma fights where the BJJ fighter couldn’t get his opponent to the ground (due to the opponent being superior with Wrestling or Judo) and the opponent also has superior striking = a long day for the BJJ guy. Or actually maybe not a long day if he gets KTFO quickly.

Because BJJ doesn't cared about Takedowns their Ground Game are perfect if you don't know jiu jitsu and go to ground it's over, But the Grapplers started train jiu jitsu too the secret of jiu jitsu doesn't exist anymore every Grappler train jiu jitsu now.

If yous all were trained in Judo you would have signed the licence stating that it would not be used for fighting but only for self defence.

Man it's like jiu-jitsu practitioners don't train enough take downs or take down defense or something... That being said, once they've got you on the ground it's whole different story.

My opinion is you want three styles: A striking style An akido or judo style Jujutsu There's three phases of the fight depending on range of opponent. You don't have to master all three, just have some awareness of all them. And train.

Why is the Judo black belt wearing a BJJ black belt (red bar)? Is he also a BJJ black belt as well as a Judo black belt? If so, this is not a fair apples to apples comparison.
