I also think American health care was probably more affordable up until the 1970's. Then, the government created a program where private corporations would team up with the government to provide health care. No competition in the market, rising costs, etc.

@amkrtchyan well of course..I have done judo for 40 years. but with time it has an affect on one the trauma to the back. the reason why a floating floor is used is to prolong the playing life of a player. To many players develop problems with back and joints because of hard slamming regardless to breaking fall. as many old players shall tell you not mat is designed to take the full impact of a 200 pound player, check judoinfo.com for info on this. I SHALL SAY KASHIWAZAKI is a master.

Well yes there's the falling techniques :) But we practiced on softer mats. When we were at the tournaments, the mats they used where much harder and it killed getting thrown off there.

@amkrtchyan I personally feel one of the reasons why we in America have not done as well as other countries in Judo is because of the lack of Universal medical care. Look at all the countries that have top players they all have universal medicine, that was my point. As a kid and young adult we worried about the financial cost of injuries because of no universal medical something the USA should have had long ago.

@lallope Americans haven't done well in Judo because the top American athletes have chosen football, baseball, basketball as sports to pursue. Up until 20 years ago, black athletes also aspired to box and, wrestling is a sport in a majority of American high schools, with strong youth programs. Judo is big in areas with large Japanese populations and, hasn't really caught on with the American public.

From what I know, this video is pre-2010. Grabbing below the waist as an initial attack (that is it's not a counter) or if it's not a followup attack, then it's illegal with the current rule set. So yeah, technique isn't legal right now.

It's not legal in IJF competitions. Does that make it not-judo? Sport killed judo - the best thing that could happen to this great martial art is being left of olympics.
