My father, an ordinary South London worker, loved this song. I played him a Judy Collins album with this song on it and a few weeks later he bought it. I knew it was his secret dream. Whenever I hear it I think of him and the tears stream down my cheeks.

My goodness, what an incredibly stunning perfect voice. There are female singers still performing folk songs but really none that I can think with the purity of voice like Judy Collins or Joan Baez. Not with a voice with this incredible range and purest folk voice.

I played this song on Guitar at my father’s funeral - key of A I learned if from her wonderful piano version of this deeply personal song. (I never knew she did a Guitar version until finding this video) This version is extremely emotional for her….

Yours was my first concert in Houston, TX, 1969, Judy. I remember this song. It stopped my breath so I could hear all your lyrics. I so loved my father, too. I remember that someone asked how you could get through those lyrics without crying and you said that you have to practice it over and over until all the tears have worked themselves out. God bless you, Judy, this is timelessly beautiful. I saw you again in concert in Portland OR around 2015-16. You were surrounded by people who loved you and you were able to bring your painted music songs of life, love, and heart.

As a junior in high school, I was smitten with Judy Collins - in large part because of the beauty of this song. I told my girlfriend at the time that if I ever saw Judy Collins in concert, I’d walk to the front of the stage and lay one, single rose at her feet. Now, more than a half century later, that girlfriend is my wife, and I still want to lay that rose on the stage. Here’s to you, Judy Collins.

Thank you, Judy. As you know, one of the best things about being a musician is that you make so many people happy. It's not an easy life, but knowing how you help other people makes it all worth the trials. I got this song decades ago on your album. Would play that record over and over. Thank you.

I'm very sorry about your dad, it's so hard to lose the two people who loved you from day 1. I believe they become your guardian angels. Their with you, around you. Your father may have been sitting on your shoulders during the concerts, sometimes we can feel them around us. He'll always be there for you, he's in everything you do and say. Just something for you to think about. I wish you well ❤✨

Last year (2021), Judy Collins gave a guest lecture by Zoom at our university; we were able to Chat her out questions as we listened. I immediately sent her a message, "What's the story behind 'My Father?'" Almost immediately she broke from her talk, sang the song and then talked about how she came to write it. As a teenager in the early 1970s I was definitely in love with her and her music. The only singer comparable to Collins' style and quality, who died very young before I had heard of her, is Kate Wolf.
