EPIC. You'll never, ever, ever see or hear this on American Idol. Or anything else. This is the real deal folks.

This is also my favorite period in Judy's incredible career. She was thin, obviously healthy, seemingly happy, and most certainly at her peek vocally.

Much prefer Judy's version of this song to Barbra's. Barbra may be technically perfect but to me her version of the song lacks the emotional impact of Judy's and in fact leaves me cold. Barbra tries too hard to bring across meanings in the song which makes her version sound forced - Judy on the other hand conveys feelings and emotions so naturally that you feel that you are "living" the song with her. Altogether Judy was a more natural singer than Barbra.

thats completely subjective and Judy wasnt a more natural singer. thats not the right word. Barbra has been way too good at singing in so many different genres to not be "a natural" I think what youre referring to is rhythm. a sense of timing, phrasing. Judy had a lot of rhythm, so her timing, when shes swingin or crooning, has a lot of ease. i think thats what is making you feel more emotionally connected.

Jonathan: I think I agree with what you say, but I'd use different words. Instead of saying Streisand is a less "natural" singer, I'd say she's a far more disciplined singer, far less spontaneous than Garland. I expect Streisand herself would agree with that; she ought to, anyway. She never misses a note, (almost) never forgets a word. If she doesn't work VERY hard to make sure she gets everything perfect, she definitely gives that impression. I think that may be what you mean when you say she's a less natural singer. Garland is almost the opposite-she seems delighted when she forgets the lyrics of a song she's sung hundreds of times. She just rolls with the punches of live performance, so to speak, whereas Streisand gives the strong impression (and she has from the very beginning) that she'd be mortified if she ever made even a tiny mistake. "Relaxed" would also be a good alternative to "natural". But the end result-that in many cases Streisand's technical perfection leaves you feeling cold-I agree with completely. I admire her very, very much, but I could never love her as I love Garland.

Thank you for your lucid response. You have summed up what I feel a lot better than I could myself! I can see that I was like you suggest wrong to say Judy was a more natural singer - that is a matter of opinion. I think the trouble is I have tried listening to Streisand and although I admire her flute-like voice, the truth is that she leaves me cold. Judy brings out feelings within my own soul - she makes me sad, happy, etc - with Streisand, I don't feel anything. I think it is the perfectionism within Streisand that possibly exasperates me (again you have expressed this really well) - I couldn't perhaps care if she did occasionally forget the lyrics or miss a few notes, like Judy often did towards the end, because I suppose in my mind that would make her seem more human or natural in my eyes. I think actually a lot of people, even if they don't want to admit to it, prefer a more fallible human being, warts and all, than somebody who is constantly perfect all the time! Perhaps this is the endearing charm of Judy - in her performances, it is almost as if she is imploring people to love her even if she does go wrong at times. Thank you all the same - I appreciate you not criticizing my comments harshly, as some people would, but taking the time to respond calmly and patiently to what I said. Have a nice day.

Yes, I have to say that I do like the way Judy swings easily with the timing and the rhythm of a song. You are right in what you say and I just wish I could feel the same emotional connection with Barbra but sadly I can't - sorry!

Your comparison to American Idol is apt. I have often thought how contestants on that show are "assisted" by lights, smoke, dancers, and other props that help disguise the fact that the singer is little better than mediocre. Judy Garland just stood on stage and sang, as only she could, and she puts the lot of today's talent to shame.

Judy tried to stay "sober" during the early weeks of her variety series. Unfortunately, the ratings were terrible (opposite NBC's "BONANZA", THE #1 show on Sunday nights), and CBS president James T. {"The Smiling Cobra"} Aubrey was indifferent to her and her personal and production problems [eventually, he admitted he was sorry he ever gave her a weekly series]- and then she began to "fall apart"....

She's also dressed by Edith Head in these early episodes. Chic and understated in dark colors with subtle accents, (see the Old Man River dress) her hair in a more relaxed, almost messy style. No sequins and an extra 7 lbs - the great camera angles framing her as a STAR in a most intimate construct. Altogether the best she ever looked and sounding very very very close to the best. Her greatest vocal performances on the TV show were given in these sober, somewhat well rested early weeks. She had later highlights - but these clips and performances are her most cinematic and vocally electric. By the way - this is as close to perfect as she could possibly sing that damn song. She's a knockout.

I've read that- and I've also read Mel Torme's 1970 book "The Other Side of the Rainbow", recounting his days when he wrote "Special Musical Material" for Judy and worked closely with her during the first 22 episodes (as well as being her guest on one telecast). Towards the end, she started drinking, and kept phoning people to keep her company during her sleepless nights- including Mel- and he referred to those nights as being on "The Dawn Patrol".
