Her voice is from another world. Julie Andrews captivated me as a child and the same warm and fuzzy feeling that I experienced the first time I heard this song continues to this very day.
My Nana, who brought Julie Andrews into my life through Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music when I was a kid, passed away before I could come out to her. In my heart, she and Julie are the same. So listening to this song, I can easily imagine it being my Nana's reaction and it really helps.

Julie had the advantage of a natural English accent for the role. The other singers don't quite have the authentic 'sound' for someone meant to be an Englishwoman (although the real Anna was an Anglo-Indian). Even Julie's accent is only 99% here, after living in the USA so long. Her 'noticed' is shading into 'nodiced' in places. English people take their 't' s and tea seriously.☺

I am amazed how Richard Rogers could compose such a lovely melody from words given to him by Oscar Hammerstein. It seems to me that Andrew Lloyd Webber was somewhat influenced by Richard Rogers. Orchestrations, particularly with strings are similar to both composers.
@oliverbrownlow5615
Жыл бұрын
Andrew Lloyd Webber has openly acknowleged that influence. There's a particular song in his musical *Aspects of Love* that I think shows that influence very directly. I believe it's called, "The First Man You'll Remember." The A section of this song, repeated several times, is extremely Rodgers-like (though the B section sounds different).

Interestingly, this song was originally written for Lt. Cable in *South Pacific.* It went, "Suddenly lucky,/ Suddenly my heart is lucky./ Suddenly happy,/ Suddenly my heart is free." Director Joshua Logan, however, thought Cable ought to sing something more romantic to express his feelings about the Polynesian girl he had fallen in love with, and so Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote "Younger Than Springtime" as a replacement, saving the tune to "Suddenly Lucky" for eventual re-use as "Getting to Know You" in *The King and I.*

Actress Maureen O'Hara (who has a lovely soprano voice) was originally cast in this role by Darryl Zanuck at 20th Century Fox. She sent tapes of her singing the score and Richard Rodgers purportedly said, "No pirate queen is going to play my Anna." What is so sad is not just that O'Hara would have been spectacular in the role, but they dubbed the sound track with Marnie Nixon's voice. The movie was wonderful - but would have been even more wonderful with Maureen O'Hara in the lead.

Imagine what a wonderful 25 years I had with Maureen's friendship and editing and designing her official website. I even went to Ireland in 1999. I have had the most wonderful adventure getting to know many of Maureen's family and others associated with her. Knowing her totally changed my life and was culminated in 2014 when I was invited to the Academy's Governor's Awards and sat at her table and applaud her receipt of a long overdue Lifetime Achievement Award. I even talked to her on the phone during those final weeks - we sang together and laughed - even challenged each other to remembering Mother Goose Rhymes. She was an incredible woman! I miss her.
