This lovely solo performance from Julie's fourth and final guest appearance on THE GARRY MOORE SHOW in May 1962 has previously circulated here on KZitem and other video-sharing platforms, but not, as far as is known, with the framing prefatory and concluding material. The latter is especially engaging as it contains a reference to Julie and Carol's landmark CARNEGIE HALL TV special which was in post-production at the time...and, well, you can never have too much Julie, so here it is in its entire original form.
The other historically significant aspect about the segment is that it was the first ever public broadcast performance of this charming Stephen Sondheim song from A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM. The popular 1962 Broadway musical -- Sondheim's first sortie as both lyricist and composer -- was set to premiere the following week on May 8, so Julie's performance on national primetime TV would have been a very welcome -- and, no doubt, strategically planned -- PR coup for the as-yet unknown new show. Sung in the stage version by the lead male juvenile, Hero, this charming rendition of "Love, I Hear" is also one of the few times the lyrical ballad has been performed by a female singer.
Julie had strong personal connections to FORUM, so the choice of song was far from arbitrary. Her then-husband, Tony Walton, was the scenic and costume designer for the Broadway production, and he would perform similar honours on the show's London transfer in 1963, as well as the 1966 film version (Pecktal: 212). In fact, one of the last few public outings Julie and Tony Walton enjoyed as husband and wife before the sad break-up of their marriage was a special preview screening of FORUM in October 1966 ("Funny Thing": 5). Consequently, Julie often singles out FORUM as a personal favourite, saying the show "has a special place in my heart" (Cerasaro: para.31).
