How excellent to hear this piece recorded on the organ it was first premiered on.

Reubke composed this sonata while studying with Franz Liszt in Weimar and eventually performed it here on the Ladegast organ.

gees, that's even slower than practice tempo.

phulnelson I would agree that this performance is considerably slower than other performances on more modern instruments. When I first learned this piece I took it at a much faster tempo. However, having performed it twice on this organ (the organ upon which the Reubke was first performed), I took an entirely different view of this piece. The wind system and the slow speech of the reeds simply doesn’t allow for a faster tempo, as I discovered the first time I played this piece in Merseburg, which was in the final round of the international Bach/Liszt organ competition in 2008, some other competitors tried to play this piece at break-neck speed, and the organ sounded like it was chocking- the jury felt the same way! I feel that the piece gains a certain grandeur which is more reflective of the psalm text on which it is based at a slower tempo. Just because one can play fast doesn’t mean one always should! Assuming you’re not a troll, I would be interested to hear your own performance of the Reubke. Best wishes, Andrew Dewar

@@AndrewDewarOrganist thank you for your reply. the fugue is at a wonderful tempo, especially the last section - very fiery. it was the part before that which i felt was just too slow, even accounting for slow speech. it does make one wonder exactly what julius considered appropriate for that instrument, when he added the tempo markings in the score. or did his brother otto add those? btw, your registration is simply superb.
