I have seen several quads get their wiring harness stretched from steering and break wires inside that causes all kinds of gremlins, from not being properly routed during maintenance. Electrical would have been my first quess as well...

Decompress levers were common on any of the old big single cylinders, dangerous to try starting without them.

You can't kick that thumper,without a relaese,after it warms up. Should be able to relocate the lever. Could have caused a catch in steering. It never turns that far when riding.

When it's a possible intermittent electrical issue, techs guess an awful lot, especially when the factory approved procedure is "substitute with a known good part".
