This training session features a panel discussion co-facilitated by Dr. Cirecie-West-Olatunji and Dr. Constance West (Co-Founders of CRESTSprogram, LLC). During the panel discussion, they summarize current data about Black fathers (identifying truths and dispelling myths), highlight the important role that fathers play in promoting academic success and emotional well-being in their children, and identify culture-centered interventions that can be used to maximize engagement and outcomes related to Black fathers (and their children). The invited panelists for this webinar include the following scholar-practitioners: Dr. Michael Brooks and Dr. Bantu Gross.
Dr. Michael Brooks’ academic career began after he accepted a one-year Visiting Professorship at the University of Florida in 2003. He was also a faculty member at UAB (Birmingham) from 2004 -2013 before landing his current position at NCAT. Brooks has a BA in Psychology from Morehouse College and a Master of Arts and Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of Central Florida. Before beginning a career in higher education, Dr. Brooks worked in government mental health, substance abuse, and employee assistance.
Dr. Bantu D. Gross is the husband of Tyra and the father of Amari, Nia, Kalel,
and Jehan. Dr. Gross became interested in fatherhood education upon recognizing how
society overlooks fathers, the lack of support for fathers, and the negative commentary
used when describing fathers’ parenting abilities. As the director of Fathers Matter in
New Orleans, LA, Dr. Gross assists fathers in discovering and refining their innate
fatherhood skills. In 2023, Dr. Gross collaborated with the State of Louisiana's
Children’s Cabinet will host the first-ever statewide fatherhood conference in Louisiana,
where he delivered the keynote address. Dr. Gross’s research interests include African
American fathers’ involvement in their children's lives, males transitioning into
fatherhood, and masculinity development. Before his work with Fathers Matter, Dr.
Gross served as a mental health professional for children and adolescents in Georgia
and Louisiana. In his leisure time, Dr. Gross enjoys spending time with his wife and
kids, playing sports & exercising.
