June History - Sunderland's Victoria Hall Disaster
In June 1883, a poster enticed families to attend the Grand Day Performance for children. For all that attended Sunderland’s Victoria Hall, there would be presents and toys. The hall was filled with thousands, all enjoying the show. As the end neared, they announced that as children were leaving, there were presents at the door for special ticket holders. So many starting moving toward the exit. Moments late, the show ended. Some performers started handing gifts to the children that were nearby. This .. cause a huge wave of children rushing forward to get a gift.
At a narrow doorway, a massive jam of children formed, tiny bodies were piling up near the door with a thousand more children, trying feverishly to push their way forward to receive a gift.
