As a person from a country were the drinking age is 18 I feel like the fact that drinking is forbidden in the US makes it more popular. College students in Brazil drink, a lot, but never the way that is shown or talked about in the US. I also feel that the fact that students can’t just go to a bar and drink there, makes them more likely to create all these weird drinks at home. During my college years we would just go to a bar and drink cheap beer, like normal people

I think the BORG is such an awesome solution. It does limit spiking, and just because the recipe calls for 16 shots of vodka doesn’t mean it has that much. It’s easy to put no alcohol in your BORG and drink it confidently as opposed to someone bringing a JD and everyone in the crew having to take bottle shots, and feeling peer pressured to joining in.

seeing all this overdrinking stuff makes me grateful i had a calmer college campus and supportive friends who were more likely to take care of someone who has had too much to drink instead of encouraging more. also the pandemic struck in my junior year so our options after that were limited at best. it seems to me the biggest issue with the borg is the gallon size. if you made one for a few people and divided it into smaller bottles or mason jars (keeping lids for safety), that could lower the risk a lot i think

When I was in college the original 4loko became a trend and people would get blackout drunk but the caffiene prevented them from passing out. Frats openly bragged about the strength of their jungle juice and it’s ability to incapacitate girls. I went to one or two frat parties as a freshman because I didn’t know any better. I couldn’t imagine going to a school where the entire social scene is dominated by parties at frats and sororities. It’s common for millennials to know at least one person who was seriously injured or died while at college due to alcohol poisoning or the alcohol was a contributing factor in their death. I can personally think of several people off the top of my head. - The son of the gym teacher at my hs was trying to join this frat and fell off a second floor balcony of the frat at a party paralyzing him from the neck down. - My friends cousin and three of his friends drowned in a river after they went boating at 3am after a night of binge drinking. - My friend fell off the roof at a party but luckily recovered without permanent injury. - A girl who went to school with a lot of my hs classmates was murdered by her bf after he choked and beat her to death after a day of binge drinking. - Dozens of car accident deaths and injuries because of drunk driving - More SA and r*pes than I can count

Speaking as a Canadian, I'm not sure the lower drinking age really stops binge drinking. I saw plenty of it around me in uni, including people decorating dorms and apartments with used beer cans, plenty of crazy drunk ragers, and lots of peer pressure that led me to stay away from that scene altogether. I kind of wish it wasn't such a big part of uni culture. I actually couldn't attend any of my first year orientation week activities because of my late birthday; I was still 17 for a couple months when I started and every single event involved alcohol and so IDs were checked. These were on-campus, campus-approved events, too... the only one I could attend was like, some children's movie screening. I spent a lot of lonely nights in my room that first semester. Of course then I later realized all the parties etc with alcohol were not my scene, primarily because of the types of people around me who were into drinking- the shitty types (though my now-husband was part of that scene for a while, so clearly I just got a bad sample). It really just perpetuates a high school kind of mindset in my opinion.

Come hither, my lads, with your tankards of ale, And drink to the present before it shall fail; Pile each on your platter a mountain of beef, For ’tis eating and drinking that bring us relief: So fill up your glass, For life will soon pass; When you’re dead ye’ll ne’er drink to your king or your lass! The Tomb By H. P. Lovecraft

Amy Winehouse not only struggled with substance abuse. She overdosed and died due to Alcohol. I find the name of the game disgusting and does not do justice to addicts and/or victims of alcoholism.

Borg to me is a slippery slope into excessive, drinking and alcoholism. It’s also really stupid and foolish to post these videos online in the midst of cancel culture. These kids do know that the internets forever, right?
