This was a scrap run on August 22, 2019. You'll get to see some junkyard scenery as well as the large material grapple fitted on the track hoe for unloading. On the trip out, a few minutes are taken to do a walk-around on a 60's model Massey Harris model 50 gas tractor. It had been brought into the salvage yard a few weeks before and sold to the fellow that is selling it again....no doubt to turn a buck or two. I really should've bought that tractor...but then again I have too many projects already so fortunately some good sense settled in and I let it be. Actually it was the 'knock' that the fellow told me it had that was the deal breaker. A knock can be virtually anything...something as simple as a throw out bearing or as major as a main crank bearing...or anything in between...maybe even someone at your door !! Now, if there were TWO knocks in the engine, I guess you'd have a 'pair' of knockers...?? Just asking for a friend....
Anyway, a few minutes is spent looking over a 40 year old home made trailer made out of salvage materials, from the '54 Ford half ton straight front axle to the metal for the rest of the build. Even the tires were free. A buddy bought a '52 Chevy and it had four brand new modern tires on it with the thin white sidewall....well my buddy tossed these away and bought the correct WIDE white sidewalls. These tires were good enough for me though. This ain't your grandpa's 'period correct' trailer.
Then there's a little walkabout in the shop to look over the other portion of the load of scrap that didn't make the cut today. It was the GOOD part of the load too....if it would've been loaded. A lot of people don't realize there are many different grades of metal as well as non-ferrus metals. There are multiple grades of copper tubing and if you mix all together, you get the lowest graded price. There are different grades of copper wire, stripped or unstripped.... Same with ferrus metals....even lower prices if the pieces are too big. There are several grades of aluminum and brass too. Even disassembling objects that contain different materials brings higher prices. Sometimes with a small quantity the minimal return is not warranted, so you toss it off the side and wait until there is a large enough pile to make it worth the time to separate.
Like I've said in other videos....I've been living 'green' since way before living green was cool.... but its the 'in' thing to do today...even for guys that don't wear 'skinny' jeans. When I started it was out of necessity because it helped put food on the table but I do it now because its silly to not do it when you come in contact with the quantity that befalls me. Plus the greatest incentive is it funds my tractor obsession.....and keeps me out of the speak-easy's at night. Besides, I'd have a tough time explaining it to the Missus if I picked up something cheap on the parking lot that had two knocks in it...... (-:
