Thanks for posting this. I was Metals Tech during my service in the Air Force. I was stationed at Kadena AB and Edwards AFB. This gave me a great career in my civilian life and enabled me to make a pretty decent living. Great job!

Was this your number 1 choice? If so how hard was it to get? I really enjoy welding and would hope I get this job

Yes, it was not hard and in AMT you will definitely get to weld. Getting the job depends on the requirements of the air force but show the recruiter that you cair and they will go the extra mile for you. And if not let me know I want people who want to be metals tech!

Hello David, I'm a certified welder in the civilian world pipe/structural types of welding. I'm running out of options and was planning on bringing my skills to the Air Force sometime next year. Currently, I'm dealing with getting my weight down by the end of this year so I can talk with a recruiter early Spring 2020. I'm certain that the Air Force recruiter will give me a greater chance of letting me go in doing that career field. I'm a late bloomer going into the Air Force I'll be 33 yrs old in April.

Hey guys I’m a crew chief for the f-16s, how hard would it be for me to cross train into this AFSC and what would my training be like? Would I have to go back through Shepard? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

You definitely would have to go back to Shepard but it’s never to late. Had a TDY who did 18 years as a crew chief that decided to finish out his last two years as an AMT.

Honestly this job is great! You never do the same thing two days in a row! since I've joined I've been constantly challenged to come up with better more effective and more efficient ways of accomplishing things. It really has given me a new way of looking at the world and taught me more than I thought there was to know. As far as what ASVAB score you need I'm not exactly sure but your recruiter should be able to show you and I do know that your mechanical and electrical scores will get looked at the most, so study for those. Let me know if you have any other questions I'd be happy to help a future metals technologist!
