I love this song. Ruth is playing a character, but plays it sarcastically and mocks the part. But while doing so, she looses herself in a life she can't have and even though she's trying to picture it as the worst position possible (middle age wife) she still longs for it. As the song progress, she adds she loose herself more and more until the climax of the song and the return to reality. Incredible lyrics! I'll add that this song encapsulates what Starkid does best : doing a silly premise/fun sketch and finding heart in it.

I think what’s so good about this song is it’s not only about the character Ruth is playing, but Ruth herself. Her want of attention and affection, while still wishing more for herself. Like it makes her deeper than the jokey stick she’s got through the whole play

I was the complete opposite my first couple times watching. I thought it fell completely flat compared to Northville High and Show Stopping Number, and while it was a stunning performance from Lauren, it felt jarringly out of place in the musical. It wasn't until I realized how deeply it was actually about the character of Ruth that I realized how incredible it is.
@bbrstrc

@@ArkatoxI like to interpret that it’s meant to give you an impression of the suburban mother role, then Ruth herself. In the same manner that Ruth doesn’t practice object permanence with the glass due to her lack of stage proficiency, she also forgets that she’s supposed to be acting.

i think this is one of lauren's best performances yet. it's so funny and clever you can totally see what it's spoofing but it's also played so sincerely you can't help but fall into it. and lauren's mannerisms and VOCALS omg......her little laugh after 'bullshit mix', the way the song oscillates jarringly between bitter sarcasm and intense longing, the soft 'i used to dance' breaking the rhyme. it has no right to be this good.

One of my favorite parts about this is it that it ensnared the audience so much they didn't even laugh at one of the funniest bits "SHOULD I FLIP THE BURGERS NOW? if i had a nickel for every time Team Starkid had the comedy relief character preform a musical number thats part of a musical within the already ongoing musical was about the parts of life never got to live/re-live as they are killed directly after by an unfathomable entity that takes the form of someone they know whos already dead, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot but its weird its happened twice

What is it with Team Starkids and making the song from a play-within-a-play that, on paper, sounds _terrible,_ and making it one of the best songs in the show? A play about a barbecue with an exceptionally soulful song about feeling your life pass you by as a send-off to a character I couldn't have cared less about until this song.

The first time I heard this, I did actually cry. The way that she says the lines and then she gets to a line she relates to, like it comes through. The dramatics came out like how someone would do it if they were alone, not super serious until you actually care about a certain part, aka the chorus or etc.

One of my favorite things about this is how the motif (I think thats what its called) for "If I could finally be cool, I will know that i'm not a loser" plays from 3:22-3:38. It makes total sense for Ruth and is a really impactful way to bring it back in her performance. This is so BRILLIANT!

Honestly i feel this song is one of the saddest because the character ruth relates so much to this character she’s acting out to the point she gets lost in the emotion of wanting something more and better for herself. But then also when she sings on how she feels like life is passing her by, this is why people have you audition you could be a good actor but if you really don’t have anything to relate to the character you can’t truly become one with the character or thats what it means when an actor changes and becomes a so engrossed in that character.

This song kills me every time and definitely hit me at the right moment to really resonate with it. Yes it’s technically a comedic song about a teenage girl singing about a stagnant middle age woman that she doesn’t particularly understand/relate to, being 40 and all, but she never the less she emphasises with the whole theme of feeling stuck and that her opportunities to live her life have fled past her. I first watched this show when recovering from a series of head trauma injuries which physically limited the amount I could do in my day to day life so this hit to close to home as I very much felt stuck and helpless with how I lived out my life. I get this could be more of a snooze piece to some people and feel out of place compared to the rest of the show by my god, it is my world and I’m so happy it’s my included xx

I feel like Ruth is seriously slept on as a character. Especially since this scene absolutely beats you over the head with that fact that she has more depth than just being a horny loser for nearly four minutes. This whole song, while being about a middle aged mother, has serious themes of feeling dissatisfied, ignored, and past your prime. This is legitimately SO INTERESTING because Ruth is a HIGHSCHOOLER. For her to feel past her prime and having lost the attention she used to have has so many interesting implications. Not to mention, she's the Stage Manager, THE most important, demanding, and hands on technical theater position. She is, in the most literal of terms, running the show from behind the scenes. It's very common for kids who can't act/sing, don't feel comfortable acting/singing, or have never gotten far in acting/singing to go for technical roles in theater instead (by the way, this isn't ALWAYS true. I personally have been on and off stage and prefer tech, and know many people who just love tech and have never had a desire to be on stage). But Ruth does a whole solo with fully expressive acting, both in her singing and body language. Which Starkid didn't have to choreograph if this was a joke or a throw away filler song. They could have had a joke that Ruth sucked and it was a good thing she wasn't an actor, or that she only sounded that good in her head, but they didn't. At least, the only thing that we have to indicate that Ruth didn't actually sound as good as her actress was singing is Max's tormenting, but that's shaky at best since he would boo her performance whether it was good or not. He's a bully, that's his whole thing. Going back to that theme of being past your prime. Typically for young people, especially for a highschooler, being past your prime usually means moving on from or not being able to participate in activities that you used to be good at. But Ruth doesn't exactly strike me as the type of person who was a star-sports-genius, and like I said, she's the Stage Manager, so what if it was something else she used to get attention for? Well in the song, it mentions the character getting chemotherapy and how she received lots of attention that she hadn't gotten before. Reading too deeply into that verse (I might be using that word wrong), perhaps Ruth was sick or injured a lot as a child. Or even, still reading too much into little things, just the fact that she has such an extreme method of treating a teeth/jaw problem (her head gear) and her allergy to deodorant could have gotten her a lot of pitiful attention from her family, friends of her family, and medical professionals when she was younger. Then, when she got older, that attention began to disappear. And, as we can infer from her involvement with theater, she naturally yearns for attention and spot light. That's just the kind of person she is. Or at least that's how I understood this scene. I'm sure there's much more, but I haven't actually spent much time thinking about the implications. I just felt that there was something deeper about Ruth. Not necessarily complex, but definitely deeper than her character appears.

The first time I watched this, I hated it and felt like it was out of place for a musical like this and felt it went too long. But when I rewatched the scene after knowing what happens after, I liked it a lot more. It's such a sad song and its implications are so upsetting Edit: I don't know if anyone noticed but the final lyrics in the song is about how Ruth let their neighbor's youngest daughter borrow her tap shoes as she used to dance. In best for you, Pete mentioned that he borrowed Ruth's tap shoes

This song as well as nerdy prudes must die are two songs that I could write a whole paper on because of the symbolism and the subtext hiding in the lyrics. Ruth plays it up like she’s in the barbecue monologues but reveals so much about her person. One of the biggest messages I get from the song is she’s wants a normal life because it didn’t end when she was in high school (even though it’s ironic) and that right there is why it’s a masterpiece. It fleshes out the character, you see their wants and their dreams and it makes you forget the beginning where they told you she won’t survive. Like the cops said, it really is f*cking transcending
