Everyone blames the back injury from WCW. And while it certainly didn't help, it completely overlooks the fact that Davey was known for being gassed to the gills and strung out on pain pills and muscle relaxers for almost the entirety of his run in the 1990s. There's of course the famous story of how Bret had to carry the entire match at Wembley, as Davey had been smoking crack for a couple of days beforehand. And Davey got fired along with Ultimate Warrior later that same year for being found to have ordered steroids through the mail, while the steroid trial of Vince McMahon was ongoing. Jim Cornette has also told stories about how when he was on the road with him as a manager and part of the WWF creative team, Davey would show up to the front desk of hotels while barely functioning, and unable to even speak due to whatever pills he'd been taking that day. It sadly wasn't a surprise when he passed away in 2002, when you actually realised what his drug habits were for over a decade. In fact it was the combination of prescription and illegal drugs that he was using that caused a lot of people in the business to object to the initial ruling of the coroner that steroids were what likely caused his fatal heart attack.

It's true. He had been going hard on roids for years. A lot wonder why he never got the WWF Title back in the day...but when you look at how he was, it's no wonder they passed on him because every time they were about to push him to the world title, he's on some kind of substance. By 99 he was just high off his ass for the majority of his WWF return. At least there's no more pain for him now.

Even if he was being carried his match at Wimbley was still one of the GOATs and I would say his work in 96-97 with Owen was always pretty good in a tag division that didn't have a lot of good things (not to mention the feud with Owen over the new European Title). The difference between that run and his run in 99 is day and night. Could be having brother in laws to work around but still there was clearly still something there back then.

Its stuff like this that people forget about when fondly remembering the "attitude era". Like 70% of the matches were throw aways and just dumb chaos.

Unfortunately a combination of his demons and that horrendous back injury he suffered in WCW he was never the same and probably shouldn't have been wrestling. You could tell the lights were on but there was nobody home. Tragic end to a tragic run. RIP Bulldog.

It must have been fun for Mick to wrestle Bulldog in the WWF considering his early tag match against the Bulldogs where Mick got injured.

Wasn't this the Vince Russo era? That would explain the short sloppy bookings, that's his MO.

Russo left in the middle of it. Everything after mid-October '99 was not Russo.

Bulldog jobbing out was Vince's way of getting even for the Montreal Screwjob.

Bulldog's new look was good but he looked like a dumbass doing Triple H's bidding only to get screwed by him. Bulldog is a badass but his final run will always be remembered by him getting Rock Bottom'd into dog poo smh

It made no sense for Bulldog to form an alliance with HHH..not to mention it went nowhere as HHH told Davey Boy he lied to him and that he's not getting a title shot, which made his whole heel turn pointless.

I assume Crash was able to win the Hardcore Title in the last match because he'd implemented the 24/7 rule by that point; it stated that as long as a referee was present, the title had to be defended at any point.

I still don’t get the jeans. Why jeans? Those can’t be comfortable to wrestle in. He looks fine in the tights. It stands out in the black shorts black shirt attitude era lol.

I don't think they were normal jeans. They look more like denim joggers. I think he just stood out too much in his bright tights. It looks kinda bizarre to see Bulldog in his classic gear in that first title match. I assume he wanted to fit in so he changed to the jeans or he was told to blend in by Vince.

@@fattiger6957 that’s fair. I think maybe black slacks would’ve looked better. I could have seen him teaming with Bossman. Bulldog looks kinda copish lol.

A lot of us that kept the attitude era as popular as it was grew up watching the British bulldog. Having him back in WWE was a big deal. I just wanted to put that in perspective.

The get Kane was wearing in the 6 man tag match was my favorite of his by far….he only wore it for a short time, but in my opinion he should have stayed with that version. I would have loved to of seen a fully black version, with red outlining the flames.

you know whose finisher was a superplex, I kid thee not...the Brooklyn Brawler!! When he went through his brief association with Heenan he won a few TV matches against jobbers with that move.

This just shows you how watered down the superplex has become when people think of it that way, a move that could have ended any match at one time. Pretty sad.
