얼마전 경주 불국사 석굴암의 부처님의 온화한 미소를 보고왔다. 유라시아 동방 미소의 기원은 인도 간다라미술에서, 그리고 헬레니즘 조각상의 고대 그리스인의 얼굴에서 시작되었다. 헬레니즘 조각상의 몸짓 표현과 정제된 음악의 조화는 고대 그리스인의 영혼을 다시 살리기에 충분했다. 나는 또다른 고대 한국의 불상을 통해 그리스인의 턱을 인도인의 머리를 그리고 한국인의 눈코입을 본다.
