Signature Solar also has the 18K refurbished for $3699 - I would assume (but might be wrong) that somebody could click any of your links above so you still get the referral credit and then go over and order the 18K refurbished one instead. They say it's fully functional with a 2 year warranty so that's probably the route I'd go.

VERY interesting! Yeah, I have had inductive loads well over that! I have a 5 hp 220 sander, that would not start (inrush on the motor was 180amps) on my system. I have 4 outbacks (3400 or so each). 70 running amps, and supposedly double that for surge = 140. Would NOT budge it. I am totally off grid, (closest line is 2 miles away). I have a woodshop that has lots of 3 hp motors. I've been off grid for 20 years. Back then, Outback suggested that inverters were not really meant to run motors like 3 hp. (I've done just fine). I've wanted saws that were a bit bigger (my bandsaw and my main table saw are each 5 hp) so I finally figured out to use 3 phase motors with a VFD for each, and use a soft start. That has made things MUCH better. But now I'm getting ready to upgrade my system. I'm sort of limited because all those old devices were built off 12 V systems. I have a couple Lead acid batteries, (fork lift type) and as I said, the inverters are getting old. I'm looking to invest in 48V system, and going to Lithium ion, or maybe even to something newer, like sodium ion in a couple years, (I can let the current batteries last for 2 more years I think). I was looking at the Victron, or the Sol Ark, but maybe the EG4 is an alternative. Certainly a bit cheaper. I was hoping to go below 15K running watts, and would want close to double that for surge, just in case I even wanted to run a 5 hp motor that was NOT 3 phase, but maybe 12K output is ok. My limitations now are battery really. I have more solar than I can use now. with the 12V, just can't use it all. With 48V, then it would be great! so the 12 K has great surge, what is the surge on the 18K?

12KPV only has 80A passthrough. 18KPV has 200A passthrough. The main difference: - 18KPV can be connected in SERIES with the meter(GRID) and the main breaker panel. - 12KPV would have to be wired up a new sub-panel and wired in PARALLEL with meter(GRID) and breaker panel.
@KB3M

You mentioned using a critical loads panel if the 12K couldn't support the entire home load. Why does nobody use smart outlets to control loads at the device? 120v smart outlets are a dime a dozen and even 240v is available in the form of 50a 240v pool pump smart switches. Wouldn't even 2 dozen smart outlets crush a critical load panel in terms of cost, installation, and granularity?
