After all, what is sensible about effectively shitting in your own bed and burning your banknotes? Less air pollution, restoring fish stocks, less waste, alternatives to fossil fuels(it's a finite resource.. duh!), silviculture, regenerative agriculture and combining conservation with careful use. Win-win policies. Hats off to JSO and all environment activists, you *are* heroes.

If your from the U.S. and want to do something for the climate movement advocate support for published decarbonization plans. These reports are really the only sensible way you are ever going to get a government to take significant action on this issue. Additionally after viewing these reports you will realize how unbearably far off organizations like this are from reality of what it would really take to decarbonize multiple industries to net-emissions. It is truly mind boggling. For a good starting point I highly recommend the U.S. Department of Energy’s Renewable Electricity Futures Plan and RE-IT80% model. It is simply absurd that plans like this never get any attention especially from the very climate activist movement that claims they care so much about action against climate change.

My way of framing Just Stop Oil would be thus: Don't blame the activists for what they're doing. Blame the oil barons and their pets in politics for giving Just Stop Oil a reason to do those protests. Once they stop killing our planet and everything that lives on it, there won't be any more protests - problem solved.

“Reducing energy demand is essential to meet existing targets cost-effectively. The limited government focus on energy demand to date has mostly been on improving technology efficiency with little attention to the other mechanisms that involve reducing the need for energy. Without a stronger role for energy demand reduction, the UK electricity system will need to be four times the size that it is today by 2050 to accommodate electrification of transport and domestic heating. Energy demand reduction is a cost effective and proven approach that could help lessen the risks of failure to deploy sufficient clean technology. The UK could more than halve its energy demand by 2050, making a substantial contribution to global and UK climate goals. Energy demand reductions are possible across all sectors and particularly useful in “hard to mitigate” sectors such as steel production, aviation and agriculture. Reducing energy demand will help lower the overall cost of the transition and help to keep energy bills affordable for industry and consumers. (Barrett et al, 2021).” Ok first of all I’m already extremely confused, because in multiple sections of this “plan” JSO states, “we can end our use of fossil fuels in 8 years”, but then you read this section and they state energy demand can be halved by 2050 (which is 27 years off). So is this an 8 year plan or 27 year plan? Second of all NEITHER of the sources they reference in this section state that the UK could reduce electrical consumption by 50% by 2050. So did JSO just arbitrarily reference published literature, make up their own entirely unsubstantiated claim and then try to act like either study actually supported this bs? That’s dishonest af! (Also both studies are assessments of existing policy and not actually research of analysis and projection of what energy demand could be reduced to if x technologies were added to the UKs system). “Renewables targets are inadequate. The Government is targeting an extra 40GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030. However, it will need to at least double this target and roll out new grid-connected batteries at an unprecedented speed and scale if it is to deliver net-zero emissions electricity by the middle of the next decade. At least 10GW of new offshore wind is needed, together with over 140GW of grid-connected batteries, more than 100 times greater than current installed battery capacity (IC, 2021). The UK currently has 16GW of battery storage capacity planned across 700 projects.(Edie, 2021)” Ok so what is an adequate target? The 140 GW target for offshore wind, is just that - it’s just for offshore wind. It’s not an account of the capacity needed for literally any other renewable or low carbon source like PV, CSP, biomass, geothermal, hydro, nuclear or onshore wind. So thank you captain obvious for stating the UKs energy goals are insufficient while providing LITERALLY ZERO ANALYSIS to actually address your own problem! Furthermore, JSO couldn’t reference a single study on this? Both references are news sources giving a 3 page brief description. What a joke! If I was to ask, what is the estimated capacity needed for biomass electrical and heat generation to meet JSOs renewable demand, do you honestly believe any of these people would give me a straight answer?

Kudos on the Just stop oil front - Yea it's annoying if I'm trying to get to the office and it's delaying my journey, or interrupting a horse racing event or Cricket match, but then again people are quite literately dying due to the current effects of climate change (Note a 3rd Pakistan being flooded earlier in the year, the increasing number of hurricanes and cycles e.t.c. in the west) and it will only get worse. Protests are meant to be disruptive. It's in the name.

In Australia the Government very much offloaded as much responsibility as possible for dealing with climate change to the populace. There are State and Federal subsidies for solar panels, so a significant proportion of houses have panels and many have batteries as well. And water tanks. But private citizens have pretty much done as much as we can and it’s past time for Governments to step up, or step up more. There’s no reason for new oilfields, gasfields, or coal mines. Fossil fuel companies own lots of renewable technology because they do know that’s the future. They’re just trying to milk as much profit as possible, regardless of the damage it does.

If you are from the states and want to actually do something about climate then I highly recommend that you advocate for and bring attention to any of the thousands of published decarbonization plans that exist. Since the 1820s every single major global and domestic environmental law was forged from a scientific plan to deal with the issue, yet for some bizarre reason climate change is the only environmental issue where the public seems he!! bent on not doing this - even climate activist organizations like JSO. Emissions reports are not the same as decarbonization reports. An emissions report will tell you where your emissions are at, the risk associated with those emissions, where emissions needs to be at for optimal risk levels and some general ideas of what could be done. A decarboniation plan develops a full scale projection of actions that can be taken to reduce emissions to optimal levels complete with analysis of these changes over time and analysis of production rates, manufacturing capacity, sector analysis, cost analysis, economic impact analysis, installation rates, constructibility analysis, and feasibility analysis. Decarbonizarion plans are the reports that actually tell you what can really be done. We need society to get behind decarbonizarion plans. The good news is there are literally thousands of these already made. The bad news is the general public seems wholly unaware of their existence even organizations like JSO. I highly recommend as a good starting point you look into the U.S. Department of Energys National Renewable Electricity Futures Plan and RE-IT80% Report. If nothing else these plans provide a startling reality check of what this action will actually require. This is not our “WW2 movement”. If the U.S. treats this problem like it’s WW2 - we will fail miserably! The math is solid on this that to achieve net-zero decarbonization even in 30 YEARS will required rates of production significantly greater than historical production rates ever achieved in human history…..
@brian2440

Its significantly larger than the richest class dont care. There may be some that fall into this group, but at the end of the day you could pool their entire wealth into a bucket and it wouldn’t even come close to touching the cost of the action that’s necessary to solve this issue. It is absolutely laughable that in the states we have progressives and climate activist groups going on about how we need to invest just $6 trillion in this action. Just an fyi per published decarbonization plans the average cost estimate to achieve net-zero in the US is $15-$25 trillion….. These figures are CONSERVATIVE btw, because these studies typically do not forecast inflation, supply chain issues, black swan events or climate impacts into the cost for the action. The decarbonization plan I provided to you in my other comment has a cost estimate JUST FOR THE ENERGY INDUSTRY of $7.84 trillion. But the supposedly most concerned individuals and groups of climate are forecasting cost for the entire country at less than that….. This would probably explain why we got completely nonsensical bills like how the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act allocates $207 Billion for a $490 billion problem per the FHWA, ARTBA and ASCE. Or how the Inflation Reduction Act managed to celebrate $2 billion allocated for grid infrastructure, while the 2020 Peer Reviewed Grid Modernization Assessment by the DOE/FERC estimated the cost at $2.5 TRILLION…..

His suggestion was wind down fossil fuels and ramp up & invest in renewables (great compromise) & the country will make money, as renewable technology is being sought after across the world and businesses, so will create jobs & encourage investment. Johnny Mercer was the Tory rep & his objections that it would not work to a man that has made his fortune in renewables just made be huff and go and make a cup of tea. Dale Vince being a calm , considered person, thought better than to continue arguing with him. Stop oil was not well received by the audience, but investing in renewable energy was. The audience were totally not connecting the two! Scary. I think it’s a multi-pronged effort. Politicians are incentivized to stay in power. If corporations can offer funds for re-election campaigns, ordinary people can only influence them with the risk of them not getting elected. That means people need to care about an issue, be informed about it, and be willing to have it influence who they will elect into government. How do you have that issue brought to the forefront? In part - actions like the ones discussed.
@overlydramaticpanda

@@AVspectre The biggest problem about JSO's main MO is that it's not really impacting the politicians even a little beyond being a very occasional vague annoyance the Tories can allude to in PMQs to argue against giving any room to environmentally-conscious politics. Which is the exact opposite of what JSO want to accomplish. And it's also actively annoying and turning away a lot of people who might be sympathetic to the general cause. Say JSO actually bothered to focus their protests specifically on the politicians who consistently vote against environmentally-friendly policies (which is a matter of public record and hardly impossible to find out), or on the businesses that continue to profit from the trade of oil; they'd not only accomplish a lot more a lot faster by focusing their ire on those with the power to make a difference and who need to be influenced most, but they also wouldn't piss off the ordinary people who don't really have the power to change much of anything and who just want the right to go about their lives without having their day disrupted by what effectively amount to publicity stunts rather than viable protests. What actual material good has come from disrupting sports matches to protest the continued use of oil? These things have virtually nothing to do with each other. Nor do paintings in a public gallery have anything to do with the continued use of oil. It gets the message out there, sure, but the "message" is effectively being delivered in the guise of what amounts to a toddler throwing a tantrum, lashing out at anyone and everyone with virtually no appearance of any real thought. Not to mention that things like gluing yourself to a road or otherwise holding up traffic *actively contributes to the overarching issue* since the resulting traffic jams provide an increase of pollution... Their cause is a noble and vitally important one; their methods are largely counterproductive at best and downright idiotic at worst.
