I always loved Lagavulin 12 but I always watched the price as it slowly crept towards £100. When it finally did I bought a bottle and thought not a penny more. Next year it was £125 and it's just being pushed up and up. It's not even a single cask, cask strength offer. There's loads of it. I wouldn't know but my good pals Mike and Dustin say that the quality has been going downhill too. They don't sell out any more do they? I'm looking at that bottle through my laptop screen and even from here I certain it has been coloured with E150. The Lag 12's of old were quite pale but that's a clear bottle and it still looks like marmalade. Special Release, my arse. It's worth reflecting that Diageo market these bottles to all four corners of the globe. Many consumers don't expect bits floating around a bottle; unlike me, I love all that gunge. They also love ice. It's the automatic default anywhere hot and I've seen this in Spain. Ask "without ice" and you get more whisky in your glass, because they fill it to the same level anyway, and you get treated like a boss after that. Your perceived macho man level is at the max. I've no doubt that this is a fairly decent whisky for £60 - £70 a bottle at best. Thank you, John, for your honesty. I mentioned colour earlier but it it's probably filtered too. Sounds like Mike and Dustin were right. As for Lag 8, well it's never impressed me that much. The great Lagavulin is the 16. It's only the abv (and colouring and filtration) that is a problem but if it went up by 3% the price would increase by 50% at least. Excellent review boss. WT

I've always wanted to love Lagavulin, but I don't (regardless of Diageo being the owner). My last bottle of 16 wasn't as good as I remembered (or maybe my palate changed). When I went to the distillery a few months ago and did a flight of eight different expressions (which included core range, distillery exclusives, Feis exclusives, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 Y/Os) I was ready to be wowed, but I was sorely disappointed. I concluded I must not like the Lagavulin spirit. I loved the smoke, fruits, and vanilla, but I got lots of tannins, bitterness, and unbalance. I still have a bottle of the 8 Y/O and Offerman 11 Charred Oak to go through. 🥃

@@justwhisky Yes. 2021 is a superior Lag 12. I paid $175 on secondary for a backup on that 2021, and would do that again. Since Lag 12 (2022), I have ceased being a fan. In fact, since the disappointment of 2022, I have not purchased a full bottle of Lag 12 since. I'm not sure you can take anyone seriously who gives this a 3 and Costco's poor Islay a 5. I think this is a fine addition to the SR 12's, and Whisky Base gives it an impressive 87.75. Re price, yes, I find the Islays are priced accordingly--the more you spend, the better the dram. The Octomores, for example are more expensive, but are even better. And I recently bought an Ardbeg Auriverdes that was out of this world, and even pricier. Unlike American whiskies, where price doesn't correlate to quality, with the Islays you get what you pay for.

@@paulgordon3113 a well presented argument … happy you’re enjoying the new Lag12… I was just relaying my experience and for close to $200 this could and should have been better represented without chill filtering and or coloring… that’s why I gave it a 3/disappointing… because I know they can do so much better…. Last Laga 12 I bought was the 2017 which was quality, took a punt on this one as it had a similar cask make up. I loved the initial banana , lychee, vanilla cream taste but it is quickly obliterated by the massive oakiness which just ruins the whole event, really bitter and astringent. I love a peat and smoke bomb which I hoped this would be but its just unbalanced and unpleasant . How they messed this up is beyond me but somehow they did.
