Live at The Linda presents: Justin Friello
September 9, 2021
The Linda, WAMC's Performing Arts Center, Albany, NY
"First Day" (2016) is the opening track of a yet-unrecorded album that uses school themes as metaphors for all of its songs. This song, however, is just what it sounds like, a telling of my first day of elementary school, or rather, what I imagine that day must have been like. It just so happens that both "First Day" and "Aquarium" both use a CAPO on the third fret, making them easy to put back-to-back. Furthermore, "Aquarium" (written in 2006, my junior year of high school), which describes all the anxieties that one gradually accumulates after 13 years of school, is a wonderful companion song to "First Day", which describes that unique anxiety, perhaps our first: being dropped off at a strange place, our parents having left us. "Aquarium" was originally inspired by a two-line poem from Shel Silverstein's collection, FALLING UP, which reads:
"I made an airplane out of stone…
I always did like staying home."
LYRICS:
"FIRST DAY"
You wake me up, say that today is the day
Packing my bag, you tell me I'll be okay
Put on my shoes and then we're out the door
You hold my hand crossing the street to our car
And we drive
Kiss on the head as we approach the lawn
You tell me the day isn't going to last so long
Give you my love, you say you love me more
You hold my hand as we walk in the door
Slowly, you let go of my hand in the hall
Softly, you say not to worry at all
All of a sudden I feel so small
Slowly, you let go of my hand
***
"AQUARIUM"
I write three notes upon this page
But you will never see them
I'll build an airplane out of stone
Let my dreams fly high
I'll fill my calendar with dates
I will never go to
And I will stay at home
Never wonder what's outside
Why should we let our fears dictate what we do?
How can we let ourselves be barricaded in?
Why do people tell us what is right and what is wrong
If all the answers lie within ourselves?
I remember how it used to be
When I would venture out each day
Having plans, going places
Saying hello to beautiful faces
Well, how dare I jump right in
With all these people I don't know?
I find it easier
To sit and stare from inside my windows
Why should we let our fears dictate what we do?
How can we let ourselves be barricaded in?
Why do people tell us what is right and what is wrong
If all the answers lie within ourselves?
