Thanks @nahkamursu It's real life and it happens however it doesn't have to be happy; mostly I feel shocked because I didn't see it coming, or didn't see the chance that it might be coming; I thought we were past the hurdles for a few weeks at least until we could see how the wing membrane was healing (the next hurdle). I believed he was going to be fine too early.

@@catherinehubbard1167 The whole name is important to the meaning. And she's a fancy girl. We had a girls' weekend away (girls I trained with as nurses 45 years ago) and were at a south coast location which is pretty resort-y in summer. The local satellite towns were full of expensive fancy shops, the kind that sells really expensive stuff which doesn't seem to have any real purpose (except in style magazines where it just lurks looking mysteriously expensive and "meaningful"), and the clothing in these stores only suits 6 foot top models in the elegance factor and has no real functionality but certainly is "stylish" and impractical... And one of my friends said her partner called these places Narnie Tootsie. I have saved this name for ages just waiting for the right little batty. Narnie Tootsie is a class act and I can see her being too much of a princess to get her thumb claws dirty unless she's in a fight for supremacy or the best blossom on the tree...

Extremely unexpected, if you can be more unexpected than unexpected. I don't think I have been as surprised since about 15 years ago when Daniela's Alice died between feeds in my hotbox. (before incubator times and video times). She was a seemingly perfectly healthy pup who died between one feed and the next. She obviously died soon after the last feed because her stomach was full of milk. She didn't have any aspiration pneumonia either, so it was just a mystery death. Oh, and Lizzie's Icicle died between feeds and had a massive gastric bleed... that was a surprise.

I'm glad I don't get too many surprise deaths in my incubator; there is usually a noticeable decline where I get to prepare myself. I think I've had 4 totally totally unexpected deaths; Elizondo, Icicle, Daniela's Alice, and Pluto Pup. I can remember them all. With Alice I phoned my mentor and cried and said I'd killed Daniela's Alice; she said: what did you do? to which I replied: NOTHING. So she said you didn't kill her, she just died. With Icicle I accused the other batties in the incubator of trying to eat him; he had a great big gobbet of blood clot on his shoulder. Pluto was just: unexpectedly dead. Necropsy was inconclusive but lent towards a cardiac anomaly. And now Elizondo.

Hi Bob, it was a bit of a bugger, however since we don't know what happened with him we didn't know if there were any internal injuries. Welcome to Megabattie, I'm Meg I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care. There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies. You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow. There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions. I put up videos from Mandi and my rescue and care videos, so look to the title or description to figure out the context of the vids. Mandi doesn't rescue but she does a huge amount of rehabbing and has a lot of permanent care bats unable to be released for various reasons. She sends me the most amazing videos of her old retired bats in care; they've all got individual personalities and adorable quirks. Mandi lives 1200 kms away from me so I don't get to visit there often. I raise money for her on the videos. The rescue vids from my point of view are all mine, and if you hear me talking and see my hands in the videos doing bat care, then that's me too. Meg

Xrays are great but don't show everything especially in the human world due to insurance and costs of more reliable tests that should of been used alot of people get misdiagnosed until they end up in the Emergency Room with life threatening symptoms. Sorry for venting, someone in my family recently almost died & ended up having to have open heart surgery after complaining about symptoms for almost a year and they kept mis diagnosing him.

I didn't think I needed to worry about Zondo either - I went to the incubator with all my juice and yoghurt and grapes laid out downstairs, to find him dead. It was a bit of a shock. The health system is in a parlous state over most of the "first world" countries. I think the tests have become so sophisticated and expensive that they're pricing themselves out of the human ability to pay for it all. In my recent visit to get the stent removed, there was so much stuff used, so much disposable stuff, so much expensive stuff. Every person used at least half a dozen pairs of gloves near me, and they now have calf splints which blow up and down to prevent clots, and they're disposable now. Elastic calf stockings: disposable. Plastic gowns, aprons and gloves; disposable. Sorry about your family member; hope he's survived his surgery

It can't have been from his gut because there was no blood in the fur around his butt, and there was no injury under the fur on his butt. Flying-foxes navigate by sight; they don't echolocate; they have large eyes and see well during the day; during the night they have reflectors which enhance ambient light. I know it wasn't from internal bleeding and he categorically wasn't pooing it out. There was no blood or poo near his butt, only behind in the fur on his lower back. You'll notice that I turned him over at one stage and checked his anal area and there was no poo, no black tarry digested blood or fresh blood; his perianal area was clean, dry and not bloody. You can't squirt out blood without the fur around the area getting liberally splattered, given that he was also on a teddy which wasn't stained adjacent to his orifices.

I feared the bleeding might be from the 'rear end'. Perhaps poor Elizondo did, indeed, have internal injuries or, as you mention, he might simply not have been strong enough to recover. 'Though it's evidently a great shock, you can comfort yourself that you did everything possible to help him and that, in his last few hours, 'Zondo' could not have received better care.
@Megabattie
3 ай бұрын
The bleeding wasn't from his butt; his butt was on the other side of his body and there was no blood trail in between the 2 places and no blood on the liner near his anus. I think a tiny arteriole was bleeding quickly from his wings; enough to form a blob of blood which slowly clotted on his back where the wingtip was lying.

@@Megabattie Thank you so much, Meg, for taking the time from your 24/7 schedule to reply to my comment - it really is much appreciated. I really do feel for you, having devoted so much attention to Elizondo, 'though that's par for the course for you ; I don't know how you manage it! Best wishes from Oxford, UK.

Such a beautiful face, had really high hopes this one would live. I talked to a vet some time ago, and he said he hated working with wild animals because they cover their illness almost until they are beyond help. And I remember Battie saying he might be wose than he seems to appear. Bit morbid question maybe, but whom do you give the ones that die and what happens then? I know they cremate the dead here (central europe).

Yes they mask their symptoms until they're almost dead. But they also mask symptoms of something from which they're going to heal as well until all the adrenaline wears off and you can see how they actually are. The bodies are frozen and used as demonstration bodies for the winter bat courses. Then they get created; the vet Adrian works at is kind enough to dispose of the bodies for us.
