Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, 2,291 children have been born in Kherson. Despite the fact that Russians are literally across the Dnieper, local women decide to stay in the city and give birth right here.
"Probably, each of us better hope for something, that it will end after all," explains the woman in labor, Maryna.
In the maternity hospital where she gave birth, far fewer babies are born than before the full-scale invasion - an average of 10-20 a month. However, under very frequent shelling, the maternity hospital continues to work.
For Kherson doctors, this work is more than risky. Since the beginning of the Great War, one employee of this hospital died, another was wounded, an anesthesiologist and her husband were tortured by the Russians on the left bank of the Kherson region.
"We stayed because we believe it is necessary. We are at home, that's the first thing. We are at our work, this is the second. We are not going to give in to anyone, to give any presents in the form of our country, our home, our children," says Lyudmila Logvynenko, the chief midwife.
She, along with other doctors, stayed in Kherson during the occupation and plans to stay in her hometown in the future.
"Life goes on. It made us stronger, more resilient. We are waiting for victory," says the midwife.
About why women decide to give birth in Kherson, see the report by Diana Butsko and Vlad Safronov.
